BETHEL PENTECOSTAL ASSEMBLY
In his excellent book, 'Loving God.'
Charles Colsen tells of a Dr. Boris
Nicholayvich Kornfell, a Russian Jew who
faced the consequences of prison because he
disagreed with the Stalinist government.
While in prison, Kornfell was brought to a
place of re-evaluating his life, its purpose,
his beliefs and goals. He had been cheated
by the Czarist„ Regime. (Many Jews were
persecuted by the so-called, "Christian"
Czars) and disillusioned by the socialists.
Through a fellow prisoner, Kornfell
became a Christian. In his new-found faith,
he carne to recognize Christ's love ... true
love.
Ko 4ifell loathed prison guards. Priv:' to
his conversion of a guard was brought to
him, Kornfell would think nothing of doing
harm to the patient, even feeling justified.
One day, a guard was brought to Kornfell
following his commitment to Christ. While
he treated the guard, Kornfell began to see
his real self, the hatred, bitterness and
anger.
At this moment, he felt he was in an even
greater prison. He recognized his need of
Christ and his love. With God's help he
treated the guard, enabling him to return to
health. •
Kornfell learned love was commitment,
and that it cost. Many prisoners were
viciously beaten in solitary confinement. It
was a practice that physicians signed per-
mission slips stating the men were healthy
enough to withstand such torture. Of course
it was a lie.
Because of the deplorable . conditions,

MINISTER'S STUDY
Because of Kornfell's love for Christ and
his fellow prisoners, he knew he could no
longer sign the slips, even if his life was in
danger..
Kornfell's work was back -breaking. Day
and night he treated his fellow inmates
stricken with malnutrition and disease.
Again and again he had to stand up for his
beliefs and the welfare of his fellow
prisoners. Kornfell knew he'd face death.
One morning his fellow inmates found him
dead ... he had been struck eight times to the
head. It's interesting to know that through '.
Dr. Kornfell's ministry, the great Russian
writer Alexagder Solzhenitsyn came to
Christ.
Love is comrnitment. Love will cost. The
Bible states that God is love.. Through him
and his relationship, we can learn the true
essence of love.
We'll learn that love is giving. We hear so
much about love today, but I truly believe
we fail to comprehend what love is.
The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 13 tells
us without love, we are nothing. He goes on
to say in the same passage, that love is
unselfish.
Manv relationships today are based on
selfishness ... "What can I -get out of it? ...
Will it please me? If not, I'll check out."
I believe love is giving, giving and giving
' until we can't give anymore!
In John 3:16 it tells us, Our Father in
Heaven loved us so much He gave us His on-
ly begotten Son.
John 15:13 tells us "Greater love hath no
man than this, that a man lay down his life
for another_ r nve may cost us our physical
life, but many times I believe love entails
dying to our ego.... to self.
God's love is described as Agape' love the
highest form of love. His love is uncondi-
tional. Scriptures tell us, "that while we
were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Even
though we don't deserve the love of Christ,
he loved us.
Many times we love only those we feel
deserve our love.
Jesus says in John 15:12. This is my com-
mandment that ye love one another; even as
I love you.
Christ tells us in Matthew 5 that we are to
leve and even pray for our enemies.
Jesus , Christ loved as not expecting
anything in return. How many times do we
love subconsciously expecting something in
return?
Love is touching and becoming involved
with our fellow man. God sent his son wind
was pure, and holy to live among us and the
dirtiness of our sins. He wanted to become
involved with us. How dare we not care and
love those all around us.
The British singer Cliff Richard has been
involved in charity work for many years.
For so long he sat on the board meetings,
sent the cheques, but never realized what
suffering was involved until he went to In-
dia, walked upon the muddy roads and
touched the hands of the poor.
Mother Theresa and Dr. Mark Buntain for
years have.ministered amongst the poor of
India forsaking the comforts of our western
civilization.
In a world that is crying desperately for
real and genuine love let us become in-
dividuals who share Christ's love:
Let us recognize that the only way we'll
come to realize love in our own hearts and
our caring for others, is by coming to per-
sonally know the one who is love, our
Heavenly ' rather through ' iiia So;; Jesus
Christ.
