Mothers of the bride
can go gIamOrOUS
It used to be that you could always spot
the dresses for mothers of the bride in
any fine dress shop. All you had to do
was look for the dowdy, lacklustre
dresses tucked in x nsp cuously in some
corner.
How times have changed! Mothers
have finally realized that no one can out-
shine the bride on her day, but if handled
with taste and bride and groom aas well as the mothers of the
bridesmaids can look as. glamorous as
they please.
Canadian women progressed from be-
ing conservative dressers to selecting a
bolder and more daring look for wed-
dings, with color glitz and glamor.
The mothers of the bride and groom
"are going bananas" these days with se-
quins, beading and rhinestones on their
dresses and headpieces.
There's also a return to the draped,
elegant looks so popular during the '40s
and '50s. Part of the ;credit for this return
to elegance, goes to the popular television
series Dynasty. Not only has it put
elegance back in fashion but it has shown
us that older women can be just as sexy
and glamorous as their younger counter-
parts.
Most bridesmaids are practical in their
selection insisting on a dress that can be
recycled for other special occasions, such
as Christmas and New Year's. Boatneck
necklines, three-quarter length sleeves,or
leg-of-mutton sleeves and low dipped
backs are very popular designs with
bridesmaids these days.
Currently in vogue for both
bridesmaids and mothers in the wedding
party are opera or intermezzo length
hemlines. The intermezzo length falls
four to five inches above the ankle and
suits today's weddings, which are less
formal than they were before. Very few
mothers and bridesmaids are opting for
floor length dresses. anymore.
Silks and crepe de Chines are popular
fabrics for spring and summer weddings.
Taffeta isn't in as much demand for the
fall and winter as it used to be. Instead,
satin and a heavier weight silk, known as
silk dippione, have taken its place. Silk
dippione is a beautiful, crisp fabric. Be-
ing silk, the colors are so radiant.
On the subject of color, mothers ands
bridesmaids have some gorgeous shades
to choose from in their wedding attire.
Trendy colors for mothers include the
staple royal blues and dusty roses, as
well as lilacs, teal blue and peach — a
popular color for spring.
For bridesmaids, emerald green, well
suited for winter weddings,, is also filter-
ing into spring weddings. Peaches and
apricots, grays and taupe look lovely in
combinations together. The bridesmaid
might try a dress in peach with a splash
of gray in the form of a belt.
Women of all ages still enjoy hats or
headpieces — such as flowers, sequins,
feathers or rhinestones. Hats will still be
in as long as Princess Di keeps wearing
them.
There is a noticeable trend toward
shorter, opera length dresses for the
mothers and bridesmaids.
