The tradition of giving a diamond to
signify an engagement began in 1477
when Maximilian of Austria gave Mary
Burgundy a diamond ring to seal their
betrothal. He was very much in love with
the young princess and was searching for
a fitting symbol of his love, when one of
his advisors suggested mounting a single
perfect diamond on a single gold band.
The tradition has endured through the
centuries because of the special romance
and indestructability of alI diamonds. To-
day, 75 per cent of all first time brides
will receive a diamond engagement ring
from their fiance as a symbol of their
love and commitment to one another.
Most brides favour a simple, classic
design, so the solitaire diamond ring is
the most popular style. The solitaire set-
ting shows the diamond off to.. its best ad-
vantage allowing the quality of the dia-
mond to shine through. It is true that
nothing matches the brilliance of a
single, sparkling diamond, but there is
also a more practical reason to purchase
a solitaire — value.
When a couple buys a s gle fine dia-
mond in a simple setting; they are get-
ting more for their money than if they
were to purchase a, ring with more,
smaller diamonds or a more complicated
setting. The value of the diamond should
determine the price of the ring.
How much should a couple spend on a
diamond engagement ring? One guideline
offered by experts is two -months salary.
This allows the couple to spend a
reasonable amount but still have a dia-
mond that the bride can be proud to
wear. The diamond engagement ring is a
once-in-a-lifetime purchase. -
