Eating only when . you're hungry is more gm 14- elk lip+ ink in Recently I read an amusing and amazing article on grazing, the habit of eating what you want, when you want it. A revolution? Yes, but how did it happen in such a short time? They say it began in the 60s developed in the 70s, bloomed in the 80s and is still growing up - and out. People used to sit down at regular hours to meals, which entailed long range planning, schedule juggling and arguments on the kids' part, added pressure on father and frustration for mother. A ,research group_says it didn't evolve from snacking - thatliccurs between meals - grazing replaces meals. It saves time. You can eat where you find the food - the kids love it - they can play without being scolded for missing dinner. Healthwise it is better since you don't overload at one sitting and less food, oftener, .adds up to more in terms of well- being. We are returning to the hunt -and- . • gather existence of our species. "You eat when you're hungry and drink when you're dry" - can't recall the rest of that song - but it seemsto fit. Somewhere, they say six small meals a day are better than one big sit down meal when you have already had two fair sized meals earlier. So, now they are changing our food habits - but the kids are getting healthier and big- ger and how about those seven foot ones! The oldsters can decide on their own meals - but do take your vitamins. They do help. Kids have certainly taken over when it comes to what they want. Even very young children' put on big scenes in stores because they know Mom won't correct them or argue. This may interest many parents, to- day, on "Children and Why Aren't They Helping" around the house? . Parents know they should share household chores - and youngsters say they will help = but does it happen? Bonnie Mc- Cullough of the Herald Tribune of Sarasoto says there are two reasons. Children aren't motivated to work out of guilt or commitment like adults often are, and also they forget to use basic manage- ment strategies at home. Kids don't see things that need to be done - they must be trained. No matter what the reasons, there are some basic strategies that will improve the situation. Because they will pick up a few things doesn't mean they will do it again on command. A certain level of maturity and adult guidance is required. Cut down the quantity of - items to something they can manage in their bedrooms - according to their age. Rotate - some of the toys and clothes, make the job easy= then it isn't a job. Don't give one child authority over the other , - result — arguments and tears : they ,dont. knowhow to handle it. Help them to reach their work gdals as well as school or homework goals. A little •help and a lot of praise helps them . to understand how to do things and how to finish a job. A specified time and a written list to be ticked off helps a lot. Teach them how to do a job they won't• learn by watching; they have other thoughts running around in their heads. Be flexible and understanding once you decide how much they can do. They are not robots. Remember how you hated to clean up your home. Good luck. Love, Martha. Buy a turkey and support, A A., ti.. 4. ..
