Senior Vikings finish first in league

The GDCI senior Vikings completed an
undefeated Huron -Perth Conference
basketball season with a 61-50 victory over
the Stratford Central Rams last Tuesday
in Stratford.
The victory ensured a first place finish
for the Vikings, and gave them a bye in the
first round of the playoffs The Vikings
played here yesterday in the semi-finals
against •the Seaforth Golden Bears who
defeated the Central Huron Redmen 72-36
in the quarterfinals Thursday. The other
semi-final matched up Stratford Central
and the second place f inshing Exeter South
Huron Panthers. Central reached the
semi-finals by defeating F.E.Madill of
Wingham 88-49.
The championship will be decided by a
best -of -three series with games Thursday
and Friday and, if necessary, next Tues-
day.
The Vikings did not have an easy time of
it in their victory over the Rams. Central
had an 11 point lead at one point in the first
half, but the "ikings came back to grab a
31-30 lead by half -tune and continued to
play well in the second half, leading 41-39
after thethree quarters and outscoring the
Rams 20-11 in the fourth quarter.
The Vikings' big men, Dave Almasi and;
Darryl Black, were towers of strength for
coach Lynn Meyers team, controlling the
boards at both ends of the court. Almasi
had 23 points and Black had 13. Guards
Todd Graham and Bob Barwick handled
the ball well and scored 13 and 10 points
respectively. Travis j3e11 had the Vikings'
other two points.

The GDCI midget boys basketball team
finished the season on a strong rtbte Friday
with a strong showing in the Huron -Perth
championship tournament in Stratford.
The Vikings struggled at the first of this
season, but, under the watchful eye of
coach Lynn Meyers, gradually improved.
In recent outings, especially on roadtrips
to Stratford and Sarnia, the Vikings began
to gel both offensively and defensively, but
in then tart league game, tile Vikings were
blown out by 40 points by the undefeated
Stratford Central Rams.
In the tournament Friday, the Vikings
came into their own, bombing Listowel, 81-
43, in their first game and putting a scare
into the Rams, before bowing 62-48. The'
Vikings and Rams were tied 31-31 at half
time and the Vikings had led at the end of
one quarter. The Rams got on trach in the
second half and managed to gain a 10 pointt,
lead by the fourth quarter. They then used
a two minute stall to ensure their victory.
Meng Troeung led the Viking scoring
with 18 points and Greg Alcock had 13
against Stratford.
Against Listowel, the, Vikings got strong
games from Ken Webb, Alex Hoernig, '
Meng Troeung, Shawn Currie and Ron
Plaeschaert.

Exciting curling was played last
Wednesday night as three teams tied for
first entered the playdowns to determine a
winner.
Tricky ice conditions added to the ten-
sion as on Ice 1 Doreen Garrow's team of
Lesley Zolob, Ruth Jermyn and Michelle
Lakachko defeated Nancy McKinnon's
team of Georgia Ball, Donna,Finnegan and
Patti McManus 8 - 5.
One Ice 2, Emily Crew's team struggled
against itaren Kirks excellent team of
Anne Steward, Rosemary Beange and
Gwen Kiar. In Emily Crew's absence
Kathy Hamilton, Colleen Maguire and Kel-
ly Shriener combined their efforts to stem
the tide of the Kirk team who hada habit of
sitting *three or four, rocks in the house at.
the conclusion of an end. Final score was
12-4, for Kirk;
On Ice 3 the closest game of the evening
Was played. Lexie O'Neil's team of Holly
Tweens hammer
Forest 20-0
The Goderich Tweens continue to rack
up easy victories in Ontario Ringette
Association play and Saturday's game in
Forest was no exception as Goderich won
20-0.
The Tweens scored 10 goals in both
periods to win the game handily.
Jan Hamilton led the Goderich offence
r with five goals while team-mate Angie
Harrison had four goals in the game. Don-
na Waterfield had • three goals for Goderich
and Alesha Glousher, Jackie Crawford and
Stacey Clarence scored two goals apiece.
Tracey Melick and Trish Rumig scored
one goal each for Goderich.

Doherty, Vi Stringer and Patty Noirel curl-
ed to a close victory over Nancy Nephew's
team of Joan Hibbert, Roberta Machon
and Margaret St. Louis. The final score
was 6 - 5.
This year .the Jean McDonald trophy
was won by Doreen Garrow and her team
of Lesley Zolob, Ruth Jermyn and
Michelle Lakachku. Congratulations! Nan -
c3 McKinnon's team and Ernily Crew's
team tied for second place but due to an
earlier game the Crew team will officially
take third place.
The mixed curling team. representing
the Maitland Curling Club of Goderich lost
out in the final games of both the A side
and B side this past weekend in the Pepsi
Cola Junior Mixed Zone playdowns.
The eight -team, two day event was held
at the Maitland Curling club Saturday and.
Sunday.
The Goderich team, with skip, Mark Jef-
frey, vice, Tanya Jeffrey, second, Mike
Collins and lead, Katherine Murphy
defeated Hanover 7-6 and Kincardine 4-3 in
the Saturday games, then lost to the even-
tual winner, the Pete Irwin team from'
Markdale Curling Club.
This moved the Goderich team to the B
side, and they faced the Doug Gibson rink
from Harriston, in that final.
The more experienced,team'from Har-
riston hardly missed a shot, and walked
ayvay with an easy 9=4 win.
Both Harriston and Markdale move on to
the Regionarlinals in Glencoe on March 1
and2. .
