BY DAVE SYKES
The annual. Goderich Old Deckhands
Tournament may have been sponsored by
Labatt's this year but • it was definitely
Miller time Sunday for the host Deckhands
club.
The Deckhand's Ron Miller scored two
goals, including the winner in sudden-
' death overtime and set up another to lead
Goderich to a 3-2 win over Forest in the
Bedford Division championship here Sun-
day.
The victory, a come -from -behind effort,
avenged a 4-1 loss to Forest earlier Sunday
and set the stage for the final.
Goderich took the lead in the champion-
ship game late in the first period as Miller
made a fine' play to keep the puck in the
Forest zone before feeding linemate Paul
Corriveau for the game's first goal.
Forest got that one back in the first
minute of the second period as Ted Mc-
Cahill finally beat Rick Palla in the
Goderich goal after Palle had made
several saves. McCahill scored his second`
of the game late in the second period to
boost Forest into a 2-1 lead.
The Old Deckhands tied the game three
minutes into.the final period as Corriveau
won the draw in the Forest zone and Miller,
redirected Rick Sowerby's shot from the
point off .the post on Wayne Wellington's
stick side for the tying goal.
Goderich enjoyed several good scoring
opportunities late in the game but failed to
capitalize on its chances.
• Miller finally ended the game with just
three and half minutes left in the first
sudden -death overtime period as he corall-
ed a loose puck at the Forest blueline and
skated in on the left side. His initial shot
was blocked by Wellington but Miller
prevailed and his backhander squirted
through the goaltender into the net. Miller
was chosen the game's MVP for his• ef-
forts.
Goderich netminder Rick Palla, a
defencernan by trade in the Recreation
Hockey League, played well for the 01
Deckhands allowing just seven goals in
four games, one into an empty net.
Goderich reached the division final by
defeating Gifford and Clinton in the round
robin series and losing to Forest.
In its opening game, Goderich defeated
Gifford '2-0 in a game that was dominated
offensively by the Old Deckhands.
The game was scoreless until the final
minute of the second period when Sowerby
took matters into his own hands, rushed
the length of the ice and tucked in his own
rebound on Mike Loucks who played a
solid game in net for Gifford.
Midway through the third period, Buck
Million picked up a Terry Miller pass,
streaked in on the left side and beat Loucks

The Goderich Sailors bowed out in the
ininimum three games in their best -of -five
quarter final OHA Junior `C' playoff series
with the Port Elgin Bears, but not before
giving their home fans one of the most ex-
citing hockey games seen here in years.
The Sailors had lost the first game 8-3 in
Port Elgin, but they came back with a<`!!
vengeance here Tuesday, playing with
considerable spirit and skill before losing
7-6 in double overtime. On the night's play,
the Sailors deserved a better fate. The
Sailors scored the game's first two goals !!
only to see the Bears score five straight to
lead 5-2 by the midway point of the second
period. Instead of folding, the Sailors went !'
to the attack, outscoring the Bears 3 - 1 in j.
the remainder of the second period and 1-
0 in the third to force the game into over-
time.
The team played a 10 minute period of
overtime in which neither scored and then
went into a sudden -death period which
went 14 minutes until the Bears got the
break that won them the game.
In that overtime session, the teams
played on even terms until a Port Elgin •
penalty gave the Sailors a power -play op-
portunity after 12 minutes of play. The
Sailors exerted tremendous pressure on
the Bears, but goalie Mike Rourke, with
the aid of a couple of goalposts, held the
Sailors off the scoresheet. When Rob
Judd's penalty expired, he came out of the
box just in time to take a lead pass from
Terry King. With a Sailor defenceman
Todd Jeffrey draped all over him, Judd
still managed to slide the puck past Randy
Gaynor into the net to give the Bears their
instant victory.
The Sailors started strong, with a pair of
power play goals early in the first period.
Chris Sideris finished off passes from
Shawn Larder and Daryl Madge for the
first one and then Daisy Gallow combined
with linemates John Thompson and Pete
Willems for the other.
The Bears then took command, scoring
five straight goals to lead 5-2 before John
Thompson scored on a shorthanded situa-
tion, stealing the puck from the last Bear
back. Port Elgin scored a minute later, but
Rick Shakes scored for the Sailors, taking
the puck off the back boards.and beating
Rourke. Brad Armstrong and Kevin
Telford assisted. Another powerplay goal
by John Graham, who knocked the puck in-
to the net while on his knees pulled the
Sailors within one goal of the lead before
the end of the second period. Shawn,
Larder and Ray Vanstone were credited
with aseists.
The Sailors got the only goal of the third
period on a hard wrist shat from long
range by Todd Jeffrey. Dave Callow made
. a good play to get the puck to Jeffrey.
The large crowd on hand was obviously
appreciative of the strong effort put in by
