Award-winning arranger to conduct
Orchestra London Canada Dere March 1
Richard Hayman, chief arranger for the
Boston Pops Orchestra during Arthur
Fiedler's 30 year tenure, will be the guest
conductor when Orchestra London Canada
presents another concert in the Rotary
Club's Symphony Series.
The spring concert will take place in the
GDCI auditorium Saturday, March 1 at
8.15 p.m. Tickets, available from Camp-
bell's and Rotary Club members are $10
for adults and $5"for students.
Richard Hayman, served as the chief ar-
ranger for the Boston Pops Orchestra dur-
ing Arthur Fiedler's tenure for over 30
years. He has appeared as a guest conduc-
tor with this orchestra, and has produced
special arrangements for dozens of their hit
albums, along with many famous Boston
Pops singles, including "I Want To Hold
Your Hand." Under John Williams' direc-
tion, the Orchestra continues to program
Hayman's award-winning arrangements
and orchestrations. Hayman had been Prin-
cipal Conductor of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra's Pops Concert Series since 1970,
and is also the Principal "Pops" Conductor
of the St. Louis, Alabama and Hartford
Symphony Orchestras and Calgary Philhar-
monic Orchestra. His original compositions.
are standards in the repertoire of these or-
chestras, as well as often -played selections
of many orchestras and bands throughout
the world.
During the past several years, Hayman
has been concentrating .most of his time on
guest conducting orchestras in special
"Pops" concerts. He is reinvited, season
after season, by all of the leading orchestras
across the continent to conduct these
popular entertainments during their regular
seasons, as well as for, their summer
festivals.
Hayman has recorded extensively for
Audio Fidelity Records. His first album, en-
titled "Ruby," includes a new stereo version
of this million -selling hit song, while a se-
cond disk, "At the Pops," with the St. Louis
Symphony Orchestra, features the original
1953 arrangement. Most recent releases on'
the Bainbridge label include four albums of
Richard Hayman and the Manhatten Pops
Orchestra.
At the age of eighteen, Hayman began
touring the country with a well-known har-
monica group, the Borrah Minevitch Har-
'nonica Rascals. Hired as a musician, he
was soon writing all the music for this large
ensemble. Early in his career, while or-
chestrating and arranging for various
singers and performers in the Las Vegas
and Hollywood areas, his unique style of
The Prodigal
A fast -paced, modern-day allegory, akin
to the familiar Bible story, The Prodigal, a
World Wide Pic es Presentation, will be
shown Sunday,'ebruar-y 23 at Bethel
Pentecostal Assembly at 7:00 p.m.
Set in the contemporary urban framework
and intimately 'examining the gradual
spiritual and emotional breakdown of an
American family as each member searches
for his identity, The Prodigal was filmed
entirely on location in Seattle and various
other spectacular sites throughout the state
of Washington.
Heading the outstanding cast are John
Hammond; Hope Lang and John Cullum.
Hammond, who portrays the title role of the
wayward son caught up in the netherworld
web of drugs and sex, was recently starred
in the hit mini-series "The Blue and the

,writing and arranging caught the ear of
MGM Studios' musical director, Georgie.
Stoll, who put young Hayman to work or-
chestrating for such motion pictures as
"Girl Crazy" ( with Judy Garland and
,_.. y "Meet St. Louis" rieney Rooney), irec2e Me in .ULiS
(again with Miss Garland), and • "As
Thousands Cheer." Along with arranging
some of the music, he appeared as well in
the films "Coney Island" and "Sweet -Rosie
O'Grady" ( both starring Betty Grable) for
Twentieth Century Fox, and "Always in My
Heart" ( with Walter Houston.andKay Fran-
cis) for Warner Brothers. '
While in Hollywood, Hayman further ad-
vanced his knowledge in the art of compos-
ing and conducting film music through
studies with many notable musical giants,
including Alfred Newnan at Twentieth Cen-
tury Fox, Victor Young at Paramount,
Georgie Stoll and Herbert Stothart at MGM,
and Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Kor-
ngold at Warner Brothers.
A trip back to his home in Boston led to his`
joining the then popular Vaughn Monroe Or-
chestra as musical director for Monroe's
recordings and television and radio show, a
very successful collahpratinn that, lasted
five years. During this time, Hayman also
began to direct the musical activities of
various other recording artists.
Hayman took what was considered to be
just an ordinary theme for the motion pic-
ture "Ruby Gentry," and, through his
specially stylized arrangement, utilizing a
harmonica as the solo lead instrument with
a large, quasi -symphonic orchestra, it
zoomed to the top of the hit parade all over
the world "Ruby" broke every success
record in the books, and brought about a
renewed interest in the harmonica, an in-
terest which has continued through the
years with everything from rock groups to
full symphony orchestra.

piece Some people will be uncomfortable
when they see thisfilm, asit strikes so,,elose
-to home, paralleling so.many of !today's
family situations. But we believe that the
current trend of the public's willingness to
