Reserve fund will save
for new police/lire station
The 55 -year-old police station on West
Street is completely antiquated and should
be replaced by a new building, Goderich
council agreed atits Feb. 3 meeting. A mo-
tion was passed to set up a reserve fund at
budget time towards a new police -fire sta-
tion.
"We shouldn't start spending money
now (to renovate the police station). We
need a new fire hall. We should look at a
new building," said Reeve Harry Worsell.
Coun. Glen Carey agreed, adding that
the fire committee had already begun a
reserve fund for that purpose.
"As well as setting up a reserve fund, we
should take positive steps and look at what
other towns have done," said Coun. Bill
Clifford.
Clifford commented on the character of
the police station saying that from a cer-
tain angle, he's reminded of "something
from an old western movie" when he looks
at the station.
A report from the works and property
committee says renovating the police sta-
tion would cost from $30,000 to $50,000
without taking into account a police
garage or an extra bay and showers in the
fire station.
It adds that a structural analysis of the
building done in 1979, shows that the major
structural supports do not meet the re-
quirements of the Ontario Building Code
although, because of the age of the
building, it does not have to meet the re-
quirements.
Works commissioner Ken Hunter sug-
gested council refer the matter to the
works and property committee with input
from the police and fire committees before
setting up a reserve fund.
"The thought is good but the costs may
be staggering ( for a new building). There
are almost no grants available for this
type of building," he said.
A $1500 donation was made to the Goderich Laketown Band on Monday night by Bob
Woodall, first vice-president of the Lions Club. Accepting the cheque, which will be used"for
the general running expenses of the band, is Jim Peters. (photo by Susan Hundertmark
Board decides to ban smoking
By Stephanie Levesque
School board meetings could become
tense over the next few months and it won't
be over any controversial issues. Some
trustees on the Huron County board of
education could start biting their nails as
they will only be able to smoke for 10
minutes of every hour.
At its Feb. 3 meeting, the school board
decided it would request its members not to
smoke during the meeting. For each hour of
the meeting however, there will be a 10
minute break "for the personal comfort of
members".
This doesn't mean trustees will be cram-
ming the washrooms of the board office. A
room adjacent to the board room has been
set aside for smoking.
There was a lot of kidding at the meeting
and trustee John Elliott jokingly called for a
minute of silence.
Although a former smoker, it is the first
time in four years this reporter left the
.school board meeting without a headache.
