International hockey returned to the
Goderich Arena on the weekend as the two
novice Tier II teams hosted two teams
from Port Huron, Michigan in a weekend
series.
The series completed the second leg of
the annualexchange between the teams.
Several other Port Huron teams will be in
Goderich in March.
In the weekend series, the Goderich blue
team lost both games 7-1 and 9-0 while the
orange team tied Port Huron 2-2 Saturday
before losing 3-2 Sunday.
In the first game Saturday, Port Huron
built up a 4-1 first period lead and coasted
to the 7-1 win. Jeremy Powell scored teh
Goderich goal with John McDonald
assisting. In ,,the game Sunday, Kevin
Crittendon scored seven goals and Port
Hurom romped to a 9-0 win.
The blue team was more successful
Saturday as Mark Johnston scored his
second goal of the game with less than
three minutes left in regulation time to
boost Goderich into a 2-2 tie. Johnston also
scored in the second )period. Darryl
Fielder and Bryan Currie assited on the
goals.
In the game Sunday, Port Huron scored
three straight goals to erase a 1-0 Goderich
lead and went on to win 3-2. Fielder had put
Goderich ahead with the only first period
goals before Port Huron scored three
straight.
Steven Bogie scored the second
Goderich goal from Fielder but Port
Huron hung on for the win.
The teams exchanged gifts on Saturday
after the first game.
The Bedford Flyers moved back into
first place in the Recreation Hockey
League standings winning two games this
past week including a 10-4 thumping of
O'Briens Sunday.
The victories boosted the Flyers into
first spot with 35 points in 28 games.
Hodges has moved into a tie for second
with O'Briens at 31 points and Murphys
has slipped to a tie for fourth with Ernies,
both with 28 points. Sunset is sixth with 24
points, Clere-Vu Rockets have 21 and J.H.
Jets have three wins in 24 tries.
In the game, Sunday, O'Briens scored a
goal seven seconds into the second period
to grab a 3-2 lead but it was all downhill
from there. Bedford scored five goals in
just over five minutes to lead 7-3 after
periods and added three more. in the third ,
to complete the rout. Eight players shared
in the scoring for Bedford with Mike
Lapaine and Rick Rawson leading the way
with two goals each. Dan Duncan had two
for O'Briens.
Earlier in the week Bedford got a three -
goal performance from Brian Moody ,to
defeat Clere-Vu 5-2. John Hoy and Mark
Frayne scoredthe other goals.
While it may be coincidence,
goaltending appeared to be non-existent in
three games involving Ernies this week.
Ernies lost to O'Briens 9-5 but rebounded
with a 12-6 win over Green Machine and a
14-5 bombing of a short-handed Sunset
squad Sunday.
Dan Duncan led the O'Brien offence with
three goals in the 9-5 win while Standen
and Bakker added two goals apiece. Petrie
and Schomaker had, two goals each for
Ernies.
Nine players shared the scoring in
Ernie's 12-6 win over Green Machine with
Jim Hayter, Len Kolkman and Nesbit
scoring two goals apiece. Tag Sowerby
provided much of the Machiner's offence
with three goals and and assist.
Ernies took advantage of the fact Sunset
had only seven skaters Sunday scoring
eight third period goals to win 14-5. Harold
Peet padded his season's stats scoring four
goals and adding three assists. O,tterbein
• and Schomaker scored three goals each
and Rowe had'two. Jim Farrish scored two
goals for the golf clubbers in the loss.
In other league action, the Clere-Vu
Rockets jumped into a 3-0 lead and
watched as Hodges came back to win 7-5.
The victory moved Hodges into second
place, four points behind Bedford but
Hodges has three games in hand.

The GDCI Winter Weekend activities
next week will feature a broomball game
next Wednesday afternoon between the
graduating students and the staff. This will
be followed at 2:30 p.m. by an exhibition
hockey game at the arena between teams
from GDCI and Winghaln's F.E. Madill
Secondary School.: Last year these teams
played in Wingham and the Vikings won by
' one goal, so the game should provide some
excitement for the GDCI students. This
game replaces the staff -student hockey
game since the staff has found they can no
longer scrape the accumulated years of
rust from their skate blades.

The Goderich Sportsman Club held its
first snow shoot on Ground Hog's Day. Tac-
tics on. the clubs part changed a bit for tiiis
event. The velocity of the target was in-
creased and the angle of flight decreased.
This made the bird visible for a shorter
period of time.
Competition was stiff as only three hits
separated the top three finishers. Jamie
Craig was the overall winner followed by
Winchester Montgomery and Dr. Berata,
respectfully. Good shooting boys see you
all at the next shoot.
