(photos by Dave Sykes,: Flyers flog Porkers to regain top spot Goderich, Port Huron teams tangle in novice. exhibition tournament here International hockey returned to the Goderich Arena on the weekend as the two novice Tier II teams hosted two teams from Port Huron, Michigan in a weekend series. The series completed the second leg of the annualexchange between the teams. Several other Port Huron teams will be in Goderich in March. In the weekend series, the Goderich blue team lost both games 7-1 and 9-0 while the orange team tied Port Huron 2-2 Saturday before losing 3-2 Sunday. In the first game Saturday, Port Huron built up a 4-1 first period lead and coasted to the 7-1 win. Jeremy Powell scored teh Goderich goal with John McDonald assisting. In ,,the game Sunday, Kevin Crittendon scored seven goals and Port Hurom romped to a 9-0 win. The blue team was more successful Saturday as Mark Johnston scored his second goal of the game with less than three minutes left in regulation time to boost Goderich into a 2-2 tie. Johnston also scored in the second )period. Darryl Fielder and Bryan Currie assited on the goals. In the game Sunday, Port Huron scored three straight goals to erase a 1-0 Goderich lead and went on to win 3-2. Fielder had put Goderich ahead with the only first period goals before Port Huron scored three straight. Steven Bogie scored the second Goderich goal from Fielder but Port Huron hung on for the win. The teams exchanged gifts on Saturday after the first game. The Bedford Flyers moved back into first place in the Recreation Hockey League standings winning two games this past week including a 10-4 thumping of O'Briens Sunday. The victories boosted the Flyers into first spot with 35 points in 28 games. Hodges has moved into a tie for second with O'Briens at 31 points and Murphys has slipped to a tie for fourth with Ernies, both with 28 points. Sunset is sixth with 24 points, Clere-Vu Rockets have 21 and J.H. Jets have three wins in 24 tries. In the game, Sunday, O'Briens scored a goal seven seconds into the second period to grab a 3-2 lead but it was all downhill from there. Bedford scored five goals in just over five minutes to lead 7-3 after periods and added three more. in the third , to complete the rout. Eight players shared in the scoring for Bedford with Mike Lapaine and Rick Rawson leading the way with two goals each. Dan Duncan had two for O'Briens. Earlier in the week Bedford got a three - goal performance from Brian Moody ,to defeat Clere-Vu 5-2. John Hoy and Mark Frayne scoredthe other goals. While it may be coincidence, goaltending appeared to be non-existent in three games involving Ernies this week. Ernies lost to O'Briens 9-5 but rebounded with a 12-6 win over Green Machine and a 14-5 bombing of a short-handed Sunset squad Sunday. Dan Duncan led the O'Brien offence with three goals in the 9-5 win while Standen and Bakker added two goals apiece. Petrie and Schomaker had, two goals each for Ernies. Nine players shared the scoring in Ernie's 12-6 win over Green Machine with Jim Hayter, Len Kolkman and Nesbit scoring two goals apiece. Tag Sowerby provided much of the Machiner's offence with three goals and and assist. Ernies took advantage of the fact Sunset had only seven skaters Sunday scoring eight third period goals to win 14-5. Harold Peet padded his season's stats scoring four goals and adding three assists. O,tterbein • and Schomaker scored three goals each and Rowe had'two. Jim Farrish scored two goals for the golf clubbers in the loss. In other league action, the Clere-Vu Rockets jumped into a 3-0 lead and watched as Hodges came back to win 7-5. The victory moved Hodges into second place, four points behind Bedford but Hodges has three games in hand. March of Dimes was winner of basketball game BY TD The March of Dimes campaign was the real winner in an exhibition basketball game last Wednesday at GDCI between the senior girls team and the staff. Age triumphed over beauty as the staff prevailed for a 31 - 18 victory, led by the games' MVP, Chrissy Connor. Over $100 was donated by the spectators, to the March of Dimes campaign. Staff and students to play SPORTS SHORTS +++' The GDCI Winter Weekend activities next week will feature a broomball game next Wednesday afternoon between the graduating students and the staff. This will be followed at 2:30 p.m. by an exhibition hockey game at the arena between teams from GDCI and Winghaln's F.E. Madill Secondary School.: Last year these teams played in Wingham and the Vikings won by ' one goal, so the game should provide some excitement for the GDCI students. This game replaces the staff -student hockey game since the staff has found they can no longer scrape the accumulated years of rust from their skate blades. Sportsmen Club holds first snow shoot The Goderich Sportsman Club held its first snow shoot on Ground Hog's Day. Tac- tics on. the clubs part changed a bit for tiiis event. The velocity of the target was in- creased and the angle of flight decreased. This made the bird visible for a shorter period of time. Competition was stiff as only three hits separated the top three finishers. Jamie Craig was the overall winner followed by Winchester Montgomery and Dr. Berata, respectfully. The Goderich Peewee Bs edged Mitchell 4-3 in Huron -Perth league action. Jason Lebeau; Allan Brindley, Jerry Hartin and Chris Walker - scored the Goderich goals while Braden Dent, Chris Erb, Doug McDonald and' Mark Melick chipped in with assists. The Peewee Bs have, been • improving and all lines are contributing to the scor- ing. The team's record now stands at five wins, two losses and four ties, good for se- cond place in the league standings. Goderich returns to action this Friday with a 6.30 p.m. game against Exeter at the Goderich Arena. Lucan edges Novices 4-2 in league play The Goderich Garb and Gear Novices spotted Lucan a 2-0 lead and never recbvered in dropping a 4-2 decision in Shamrock League•play in Lucan Jan. 25. Lucan scored the only goal of the first period and they held that 1-0 lead until the first -minute of the final period when they increased the lead to 2-0. Goderich got back in the game on an unassisted goal by Mike McBride but Lucan regained its two -goal bulge • two minutes later. Just 8 seconds after that goal, Ken McLarty scored for Goderich to make -the score 3-2. Lucan scored with si* minutes left iii the game to clinch the win. In action Saturday, Ken McLarty scored two goals to lead Goderich to a 5-2 win over 1lderton. Goderich led 2-0 after one period, increased its lead to 4-0 after periods and coasted to the 5-2 win. Jason Meri'nm , David Lumley and Bryan Hodges scored the other Goderich goals. Players advance in bridges team competition Eleanor Erskine directed a four -table Mitchell game at the Jan. 27 meeting of the Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club at the Royal Canadian Legion. The team of Marg Hall and John Wood finished first with 29 points and was follow- ed by; Lynn Edward and Eleanor Erskine, 28 points; Ralph Kingswell and Bill Dun- can, 231/2 and Betty Fisher and Dick Simp- son, 23 points. The second night of the Canadian Na- tional Team Competition was held with Eleanor Erskine , directing. The in- termediate round will be held at the Huron Oaks Club, Sarnia or the Royal York, Toronto 1~ eb.15 and 16. The eligible teams are: D Iwna Sproule, Mary Ann Dempsey, Mary Donnelly and Eleanor Erskine who had six wins and a plus of 111; John Donatis, Bill Bradley, Joanne Gilchrist and Lee Ryan, four wins and a plus of 76; Mary Lapaine, Louise Hetherington, Jean Papernick and Auleen Curry, 31/2 wins and a plus of 47 and Evie McDonagh, Verna Worthy, Anna Godley and Edna Overholt with three wins and a plus of 24.
