Debbie Whalen's Port Elgin rink win the annual Champion Ladies Bonspiel at the Maitland Country Club Pott Elgin rink wins Champion Bonspiel A Port Elgin rink skipped by Debbie Whalen won the 9 a.m. draw and went on to win the overall championship of the 1986 Champion Ladies Bonspiel at the Maitland Country Club Saturday. Whalen and her team-mates, vice, Inez Fenton; second, Nancy Smith and lead, Marg McLeod accepted the Champion Trophy from company representative, Dick Todgham. A Goderich rink, skipped by Karen Kirk, and consisting of_ vice, Dana Garrett, se- , cond, Phyllis Lawrence and Lead, Kay King finished second in the day's opening draw while Karen Quart's Port Elgin rink . finished third in the one -day event. A Goderich entry, skipped by Eleanor. Erskine topped competition in the 11 a.m. draw. The rink included Vicki Culbert, Emily Crew and Lynn Edward. Jane Galloway and her Ilderton rink finished second in the second draw while Fay Ribey's rink finished third. Other members of the Ribey rink include Doreen Garrow, Colleen Maguire and Penny Peters. Dana Garrett . and her committee organized the one -day bonspiel. WEDNESDAY NIGHT LADIES On ice one Nancy McKinnon's team of Georgia Ball, Donna Finnegan, and Patti McManus, won 9-5 over Karen Kirk's team of Anne Steward, Rosemary Beange, and Gwen Kiar despite a spectacular triple take-out in the fourth end and a double in the eighth by Karen Kirk. Doreen Garrow's team of Lesley Zolob, Ruth Jermyn and Michelle Lakachko gain- ed another victory on ice 2 against Lexi O'Neil's team, skipped by Holly Doherty with Vi Stringer and Patty Noirel. Despite being short-handed the O'Neil team curled well but Garrow's team came on strong in the third end and continued to a 10-2 win. Ice 3.saw Emily Crew's team of Kathy Hamilton, Colleen Maguire and Kelly Schriner win over Nancy Nephew's short- handed team of Joan Hibbert and Roberta Machon, 8-4. It was a good ' game with ex- cellent shots by both teams. Legion Midgets win, tie in league -play this week The Goderich Legion Midgets played four games in the,last week, winning one, losing two and tying one. On Thursday, Jan. 16, the Midgets travelled to Lucan and came home with an 11-5 victory. Mark Cauchi led the Goderich, attack. witb five point& . Goderich got off to a fast start as they scored .three goals in the first minute of play. 'The Goderich team then seemed to fall asleep as Lucan came back to tie it late in the second period. This caused another three-minute explosion of good play by the Midgets and they again scored three goals before the period ended. Goderich con- tinued to pressure Lucan in the third period as they outscored them 5-2. The Midgets plan to play a much better defen- sive game against Lucan in their final two meetings this year. Goal scorers for Goderich were: Cauchi, Darrel Durnin and Rod Nurse two each, 'f.) and singles for Brian Chambers, Dave Duncan, Richard Boddy, Matt Wilkinson, and Ryan Kelly. Assists went to Duncan one, • Bruce Culbert one, Nurse one, 'l4eil Rodger one, Boddy one, Cauchi three, Jim Beattie one, Kelly. two, Tom Bean three and Ian MacKinnon four. , Last Saturday the. Midgets played in a tournament in which they lost both games. The first game was against Wasaga Beach who won by a score of 5-3., The Midgets were leading until the third period when they ran into penalty trouble and Wasaga Beach came back and won. Neil Rodger tipped in a Wilkinson shot with Durnin getting the other assist for Goderich's first goal. Their second goal was scored by Tom Bean on a pass from MacKinnon and Cauchi. Rod Nurse round- ed out Goderich's scoring by converting a pass from Durnin and Chambers. Jay Williamson played his usual strong self keeping the opponents to just four . goals, and an empty net goal. In the second game Goderich looked as if they had not recovered from the comeback win by their onnonents in the first game as Rolls Royce Del Geddes led the No Names to a five ,point win over Auleen's Angels. She had plenty of help from Donna Duncan 183, 190, June Rourke 193, Pauline Jacques 198, Jean Mundle 235, Del Geddes 239, 288, 703 triple. Auleen's Angels took two points led by Marg Miller 159, 175, Grace Mugford 222, Brenda Dineen 223,• Vicky Dineen 197, 227, 230, 654 triple. Shirt's Girls took all seven points from Troubles Back. Good games rolled by Joyce Pettus 172, Shirley Kennedy 241, Barb AImasi 228, 256, 627 triple. Mary Lynne Telford rolled a 252 for 101 pins over her average and a 611 triple for 158 pins over her average. Troubles Back had high games rolled by Deb Stright 165, Jennifer Kruspe 183, Liz Kruspe 211, 527 triple. Marg'Hall led the Blazers to a five point win over the Oldtimers. She had help from Gladys Nicholson 166, Earleen Spain 170, Fran Rae 205, Lorraine Jones 215, Marg Hall 226, 587 triple. The Oldtimers had a bad night as they didn't bowl their team average for one game. They 'did take two points led by Chris Reed 184, Bev Million 202, Melba Maillet 537 triple. . The Marionettes were bowling against 100 per cent of their average and came away with seven points. Good games roll- ed by Alice Mero 165, 166, Ila Williams 195, Marilyn Bannister 218 and Kit Smith 171, 205, 215, 591 triple which was 135 pins over her average. Flamboro defeated them 5-1. The whole Goderich team just couldn't' get going and the result was a constant at-, tack by 'the Flamboro team. Goderich's loan goal came when Mark Cauchi scored a shorthanded goal: Tom Bean received the assist. The best play of the game cane when goalie Gerd Maclnnis came mit of the net and shot the puck to send a player on a breakaway, though he did not score. The next morning, Sunday, the Midgets travelled to Mount Brydges and they came back to tie the game at six, after being down 4-0. Darrel. Durnin led the Midgets with four points. Mount Brydges surprised Goderich as• they scored two goads in the first minute of play. They then scored two more this time within two minutes to take a four -goal lead. Goderich got one goal back before the period ended when Cauchi tipped a pass from MacKinnon and/Tim Wilson on the powerplay. Goderich decided to make it their turn to come out fast in the second period when two minutes into it MacKinnon and Durnin send a pass to Beattie who scored. Mount Brydges scored another to make it 5-2. But then Goderich spored two goals to end the second period. Duncah scored on a good passing play from Wilson and Durnin with three minutes left in the period. A minute later Rod Nurse scored on almost the iden- tical play, this time from Beattie and Dur- nin. In the third, Goderich tied the game when MacKinnon moved in from the point to grab a rebound. Durnin and Duncan received the assists. Forty-three seconds later Cauchi stole the puck and scored on a good unassisted effort to give Goderich the lead. But with less than five minutes to go Mount Brydges scored to tie the game. The Midgets' record is now seven 'wins, 10 losses, and two ties in Shamrock league play. Goderich finishes the season with two games against Lucan, one away on Friday and the other at home next Wednesday. ads league WSDAY AFTERNOON LADIES Team/Standings to' date are: Rolls Royce - 79; Mustangs - 66; Firebirds - 66; Hot Rods - 64, Edsels - 61; Thunderbirds - 58;'Honda - 56; Love Bugs - 55; Porsches - 53; Ramblers - 52; Ponies - 47; Caddie - 43. .Good scores were rolled this week by Gwyn McRae - 271; Janet Rumig - 257, 242; Sharon Sanders - 239; Shirley Smith - 241, 224; Joyce. Hamilton - 246; Daisy Scott - 246 and Janet Daer - 236. TUES. FARMERS LEAGUE Grub's Group is in first place by defeating the Berzerko Buddies taking 24 out of 30 points. High roller for the Grubs was Tim Gerrits who rolled a 621 triple with Kevin Clark taking individual points. The Bonsai Bombers comfortably won their match over Soun71 Trek by taking 201/2 points out of 30. Steve Johnston led the Bonsai Bombers to victory with a 584 triple team effort taking individual points. Goderich Entertainers won over their opponents the Huronia Hustlers by taking 201/2 points out of 30. Harold Sartori led the Entertainers to victory with a 686 triple. The Goderich Entertainers • and Bonsai Bombers are left in the beat your own team average tournament. The league standings are as follows: grubs Group 209 pts; Bonsai Bombers 1911/2 pts., Berzerko Buddies 179% pts., Goderich Entertainers 1691/2 pts., Sound Trek 163 pts., Huronia , Hustlers 161 pts.
