A total of 16 teams will battle for almost
$2,000 in prize money at the 8th annual
Goderich Recreation Hockey League
Tournament here on the weekend.
And, Murphy's Green Machine will be
back to defend its A division championship
as one of four Goderich entries in the
three-day affair.
Last year the seventh rendition of the no -
contact tourney featured the first
Gociericn tnnai as Green ivaacntne defeated
the Bedford Flyers 6-1 in the tournament
championship game.
This year, the Goderich league will be
represented by Murhpy's, Bedford Flyers,
O'Brien's Porkers and Hodges' Mill.
The action begins Friday at 6 p.m. as
Hodges plays Blyth in the tournament's
opening game. Bedford Flyers- will play
Lucan at 7:15 p.m. Friday followed .by St.
Clements against London at 8:30 p.m.; Kit -

It may not rival international competi-
tion for precision, but effort and deter-
mination was much in evidence when the
Goderich Figure Skating Club held its an-
nual Competition and Trophy Day at the
Goderich Arena Saturday.
In the Pre -School Beginners event, Greg
Hill won the Goderich Figure Skating
Trophy for his first -place finish. Alicia
Johnston was second and Amanda Whalen,
third. Weny Bogie won the Hruden Trophy
in the Elementary Freestyle event and
was followed by Roslynn Gottschalk and
Monika Schuett.
Sue Ingham won the Charlie Boddy
Trophy in the Basic Freestyle event while
Sonja Blacker was second and Haley
Bloch, third. The Candlelight Trophy was
presented to Andy Smith for her first -place
finish in the Novice Free Dance event
while Jaclyn Henry was second and Sally
Ma bon, third.
In the Junior Freestyle event, Angie
Skelton won the Rean Trophy. Tara
MacKinnon and Julie Cook finished second
and third respectively.

up to win the Jeffrey Trophy in the Novice

the Ormandy Trophy in the Junior Dance

K. Fry finished second and team of Angie

The Junior Pairs Freestyle event and
the William O'Neill Trophy was won by B.
Schuett and L. Adamson. Graham and
Clifford finished second and Skelton and
MacKinnon, third.
The Dechert Trophy for a first -place
finish in the Intermediate Dance category
was won by Tammy Marshall. Melissa
Hruden finished second in the event and
Sonya McCallum was third.
Paula Glew won the Domtar Trophy in
the Intermediate Freestyle event while
McCallum finished second and Jillian
O'Neill, third.
Susan Cook was a double winner on the.
day as she captured the Craven Trophy for
her performance in the Senior Dance Com
petition and she later took the Howes
Memorial Trophy for her first -place finish
in the Open Senior Freestyle event.
Emma Hollingworth finished second in
the senior dance event and Jennifer Huyck
third. Hollingworth combined with Mc-
Callum to win the Zoe Raithby Trophy in
the Senior Freestyle Pairs event while
Glew and O'Neill finished second.
Hollingworth rounded out her perfor-
mance by winning the Champion Trophy in
the Senior Freestyle kevent. Melissa
Hruden finished second.

The Goderich Atom Bs won two games
over the weekend defeating Lucknow 8-2
Friday and Wingham 2-1 here Sunday.
In the game against Lucknow, Goderich
led 4-2 after two periods but blew the game
open with four goals in the final period. D.
Boyce led the Goderich offence with'five

assists and Edwards two.
The game against Wingham here Sun-
day was of the defepsive variety as the,
teams were tied 1-1 after one period, they
played through a scoreless second period
and then Goderich won the game ona<thir'd
period goal by Shawn Carver on an
unassisted effort.

with a first period goal. •

edges Bayfield
The Goderich Figure Skating Club held its annual competition and
trophy day at the arena Saturday. Susan Cook comes out of a spin

The Goderich Tier II Noviceorange
team scored -two goals in the final period to
defeat Bayfield 4-2 in Huron -Perth action.
The teams were tied 1-1 after one period
with Mark Johnston scoring the Goderich
goal from Bryan Currie. Goderich took the
lead in the second with Darnell Connelly
scoring the only goal of the period.
Goderich outscored Bayfield 2-1 in the
final period to win the game 4-2. Ben Arm-
strong and Johnston with his second goal
of.. the game, put the game away for
Goderich.
Atoms win,
two games
The Goderich Atom As defeated Lucan 3-
0 in Shamrock League play last week and
in exhibition play this week they scored
three third period goals to defeat the
Peewee Bs 5-3.
In the game against Lucan, Goderich
scored once in the first period and added
two more goals in, the . second period to
record the 3-0 win. Jared Whalen, Andrew
McLarty and Jason Jeffrey scored the
goals for Goderich while Jason Duckworth
picked up the shutout in net. Bill Ingham,
Chris Dickson, Mark Philips, Jason Cook
and McLarty picked up assists.
In the exhibition game Saturday, the
Atoms built . up a 3-0 lead and then
outlasted the Peewee Bs 5-3. Sam Hosack,
Jeff Beange, Jamie Stanley, Jason Hayter
and Jason Volland scored for the Atoms.
Jerry Harlin scored two goals for the
peewees while Allan Brindley scored one
goal.
Wins propel Porkers to top spot

O'Brien's Porkers fine tuned its offence
,-. - for the upcoming recreation hockey tour-
, nament by winnind'two games and tying a
third in Goderich Recreation Hockey
League action this week.
The five points propelled the pesky
Porkers into first' place in the standings, .
one point ahead of Murphy's. Green
Machine, which won one game and lost one
this week. O'Brien's 29 points on 13 wins
and three ties, is two points better than the
Bedford Flyers in third place, The Flyers
lost a game to Ernie's Raiders this week.
O'Briens opened the week's action with
6-6 tie against Hodges but rallied for an 8-7
victory over Murhpy's and then drubbed
the Clere-Vu Rockets 11-1.
In a game Jan. 12, Hodges scored mid-
w6jy through the final period to earn a
tie with O'Briens. Wayne Draper led the
Porker offence With two goals while team-
mate . Paul Kelly, the league's leading
scorer, scored on an unassisted effort and
Setup four other goals for a five-pointper-
foi,nance.
.In a battle for first place Jan 13, the
Porkers scored three straight goals in the
final . period and, withstood a late Green
Machine rally to defeat Murphy's 6-7. The
Machinery led 3-1 after one period but
O'Brien's rallied to tie the game 5-5 after
two periods. They outscored Murphy's 3-2
in the final period to clinch the win.
Dan Duncan led the way with three goals
while Kelly chipped in with two goals. Rob
Standen, Bakker and Roulston scored one
goal each. Dennis Dowhaniuk had two
goals for Murhpy's:
The Porkersacapped the tweek with an 11-
1 trouncing of the Clere-Vu Rockets in Clin-
ton Thursday two periods of play. Bakker scored two
goalsand assisted on three others while
Tom O'BrienO scored once and set up three.
The Bedford Flyers.,blew an opportunity
'to grab a, share of the league lead losing a
9-5 decision to, Ernie'S Raiders Sunday.
The teams Were tied 2-2 after two periods
but the Raiders exploded for seven third
period goals.
The short-handed Raiders got a five -goal
performance from H. Peet while Phil
Petrie added three goals in the rout. Mark
Frayne had two goals for the Flyers in a
losing effort.
In other action, Murhpy's jumped into
second place bombing the Raiders 12-4
Wednesday. Green Machine spread the
scoring around in the goal bonanza as
Dave Graff led the way with three goals
and one a?;'sist. Team-mates Rodger
Lewis, Bruce Schoft and John McDonald
scored two goals -apiece. Ted Ingham, Bill
Peters and Larry Boyce scored one goal
each. Peters also assisted on three goals.
In the other league game, Dale Duncan
scored five goals and sot up two others in
leading Sunset Golf to a 10-4 win over the
J.H)Jets. Kevin Meriam scored three
goals and assisted on four while P. Doher-
ty chipped in with four assists on the night.
Paul Kelly enjoys a 29 point lead in the
scoring race over Mark Frayrie of Bed-
ford. Kelly has 43 goals and 36 assists in 24
games.
Rob Standen was a one-man offence for
the Porkers scoring six goals and assisting
on two others for an eight -point perfor-
mance. He scored the first four goals of the
game as O'Briens built upa 7-0 lead after
Lions defeat Exeter to
win Legion zone tourney
The Goderich Lions Pee Wee's defeated Exeter 43 in the charnpionship of the Legion
C-1 tournament held in Ripley last weekend.
The Liens took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a Tim Harrison goal, but E>teter tallied
early in the second to tie the contest. Chris O'Neill put the Lions ahead 2-1 with Harrison
and Brian Lane assisting. However, later in the period Exeter tied the game at 2 after
,two. Exeter took a 3-2 lead early in the third, but a good passing play by Lonnie Romig in
his own end to Chris O'Neill to Tim Harrison to Brian Lane, who scored on a break away,
'tied the game with five minutes left. Andre Cauchi's strong individual ettort resulted in
the winner with four minutes left. Lion goalie Pat Donnelly came up with,a big save in the
final minute to preserve the win.
Goderich defeated Kincardine in a shoot-out after the game had ended in a 5- 5 tie. Lion
goalie Bob Lumley w`as brilliant in the shoot-out, stopping four of the five shots directed
at hint, while Andre Cauchi, Harrison and O'Neill scored on three of five shots at the Kin-
cardine l goalie. O'Neill led the offence in this game recording the hat trick while Paul
Hamilton and Andre Cauchi had single goals each. Brian Lane had three assists, Tim
Harrison two, and, single assists went to J.P. Cauchi, Mike Stegenstad and Aaron
Duckworth.
" By winning this division the Lions earned the right to play in the next Zone which will
also be held in Ripley Feb. 1.
Lions next outing will be in Lucan this Friday.

Sporting new sweaters from a new spon-
sor (Signal -Star), the Goderich Peewee Bs
came back'from a deficit to defeat Clinton
and extend its unbeaten streak to seven
games.
Goderich spotted Clinton a two -goal lead
but Kelly McDonald scored on an
unassisted effort to narrow the deficit to 2-
1.
The peewee Bs tied the score just 27.
seconds into the final period as Jerry Har -
tin scored. Goderich then scored two quick
goals in a three-minute span but two late
goals by Clinton tied the score 4-4.
McDonald led the offence with two goals
and an assist while Hartin and Jeremy
Grasby had a goal and an assist apiece.

one assist for Goderich:

Silver Stick
The Elevator Bantams represented
Goderich well at the Watford Silver Stick
Tournament last weekend defeating
Leamington 9-8 in teh opening round and
then losing a tough 2-0 decision to Sarnia
Townshipin the second round:
Both ams executed well in the second
game producing an exciting match.
Goaltending by Greg Townshend of
Goderich and the Sarnia goalie was
outstanding.
The game was scoreless through two
• peripds of play and Sarnia scored what
proVed to be the winning goal early in the
final period. With less than a minute left in'
regulation time, Sarnia scored into an
empty net to produce the 2-0 final. .
While Goderich was eliminated, Scott
Garrow won the Most Valuable Player
award in the A and AA divisions of the
tournament.
In Shamrock League action, Goderich
defeated Lucan 9-4 and lost to Mt. Brydges
9-3 Saturday.
Garrow, with three goals and three
assists, and Bill Trebish with two goals,
led the Goderich offence against Lucan.
Bill Whetstone, Jason Million, Greg
DeWinter, and Barry Thompson scored
the other Goderich goals. Thompson 'also
added two assists.
In the game against Mt. Brydges, the
tams were tied 1-1 after -one period with
Trebish scoring the Goderich goal, but Mt.
Brydges scored four straight goals in the
second period to hold a 5-2 lead heading in-
to the final period. Trebish scored his se-
cond unassisted goal for,Goderich.
Mt. Biydges outscored Goderich 4-1 in
the final period to producethe 9-3 score.
John Maclnnis scored the third Goderich,
goal from Greg Alcock.
