Now Year is opportunity
Such a temptation. I cannot resist. Here
we are at the beginning of a new year, and it
seems so trite to talk about New Year's
Resolutions. Yet, I am unable to hold back.
( I can even sense a cliche or two in the air.)
- There can be no doubt about it. We all like
the ,idea of new beginnings and second
chances. In moments of charity, we have
suggested such opportunities for those who
have not made the grade in our eyes, but
seemed to have tried.
How else do we look upon those events in
our lives that come to us, on Anniversaries
and Birthdays and Graduations? We
celebrate the event, not only as a milestone
of achievement, and memories in which to
rejoice, but as moments when we look to the
future with renewed hope. They are new
beginnings. And in them, we have secret un -
proclaimed resolve that the years to follow
will at least be no less than those we have
passed, perhaps better.
The New Year is one of those times. Why
else would thousands upon thousands of peo-
ple cram into places like Times Square on a
cold midnight? To see an `apple'? Should the
change of ,the clock from 11:59, to 12 mid-
night be any more traumatic than any other
night? Surely the answer lies somewhere in
the truth that in the secret chambers of the
human heart, there is a hope that each of us,
while grateful for the past, can reach up to
something greater than, we are in the future.
And the New Year becomes a symbol of
Hope; how much we are a part of it has
MINISTER'S STUDY
something to do with the degree of our per-
sonal resolves.
Here comes the cliche. Today is the first
day of the rest of your life. It's been so
overstated that it's insulting. Yet, we ought
not to miss the truth that for each of us, any
new beginning is a challenge to assess our
past, take hold of the opportunities of the
present, and participate to a greater degree
in the possibilities that God has in store for
us.
A young man of 35, worried and
discouraged, consulted a counsellor about
the direction of his own life. During the in-
terview, he was encouraged to examine his
resources and talents, and enter into a train-
ing program over the next five years. The
discouraged client replied: Do ,you Ipiow
how old I will be in five years? And the wise
counsellor answered, 'The same age you
will be, even if you decide not to take the
training'.
Many years ago, some Magi set out in
search of better things. They followed a
star. They found the Christ Child. And they
returned home another way. While they
could have gone back the same way they
came, they didn't. They accepted the
possibility of change they had discovered,
and they resolved to respond.
New Year's is our opportunity.
