Councillors
squabble over
meeting place
'The first meeting of the Goderich en-
vironment committee was a source of
dispute at Goderich council's- Jan. 6
meeting.
Reeve Harry Worsell and Deputy -Reeve
John Doherty complained that Mayor
Eileen Pahner missed the first meeting of
the committee held at the Candlelight
Restaurant on Dec. 23.
"I thought you could have shown a little
more class, your worship. I hope you will
stop treating us like Kindergarten
children," said Doherty.
Palmer said she did' not attend ,the
meeting because there was no agenda and
she thought there was no reason for a lun-
cheon meeting: She sent a note to the two
explaining her reasons adding that the
Mayor can set the date of the first meeting.
"We didn't spend a red cent of the tax-
payers' money on the luncheon. Every
penny came out of John's and my
pockets," answered Worsell.
Coun. Jim Searls came to the mayor's
defence saying a motion had been passed
by council stating that council members
should receive an agenda Thefore a
meeting.
Coun. Glen Carey told council he hoped
the "back-biting" shown by the four in the
dispute would end.
"All four comments waste our time and
the taxpayers' time. I hope we can steer
away from this sort of thing," he said.
M ori transition
houses needed
The government's advertising program to
inform women tO1 they don't have to ac-
cept living in site ations where -they or their
children are being battered is working.
Transition houses are experiencing an in-
crease in requests for shelter.
But, in spite of fine pre-election promises,
there is no new prograiff W Otcrease ser-
vices for women who are being assaulted in
their homes, says NDP Women's Issues
Critic Evelyn Gigantes.
In March, Premier David Peterson, as op-
position leader, promised "a splid commit-
ment" through introduction \\ of "a .bill
devoted exeusively .to services for battered
women". But todayhle Minister of Com-
munity and Social Services refused to con-
firm any such commitment..
John Sweeney talks of opening new ser-
vices as minister, but everything he has
opened was initiated long before he became
,minister, says, Crigante, and, he , not
