exi,sts in the
moral realm
LETT[..RS
Dear Editor,
A few weeks ago, a very effective article
appeared in the Signal -Star concerning child
abuse.
The opening paragraph began and I quote,
"A defenseless child, one of the thousands of
children in our province subjected every
day to perhaps the most brutal of all crimes-
-child abuse."
The article continues to point out that we
all have a moral duty to report suspicions of
child abuse to give every young person in
Ontario a fighting chance.
According to Websters Dictionary, abuse
is defined as misuse; bad language
addressed to a person; insulting words;-
violation
ords;violation or infringement. Violate is defined
as injury, to desecrate, to profane.
Indeed, we as caring adults do have a
moral responsibility to be on guard against
physical abuse children may face. However,
may I draw attention to the fact that abuse
is not only in the physical realm but exists
very predominately in the moral realm.
Please, let us consider the abuse our
children face in the area of so-called
entertainment.
From a folder of movie ads which I have
kept during the past weeks, these are the
feature lines to motivate our young people to
attend our own local theatre.
Oct. 19 - "A student bites a teacher, the
school psychologist goes beserk. The
substitute teacher is a lunatic. Students
graduate who can't read or write. – Coarse
language.
Oct. 26 - "He's the ultimate killer, she's
the perfect weapon."
Nov. 9 - "Horror and Brutal Violence –
Coarse Language – Nudity."
Nov. 22 - Swearing.
Surely, this is in violation to the good
morals on which this great country of ours
was built.
My concluding paragraph is written in the
form of a plea to all parents and concerned
citizens. Let us seriously consider the moral
and ethical abuse our children, teens and
adults suffer at the entertainment level of
our society.
Sincerely,
Faye Hacon.
