CHRLSTMAS IN SPAIN _
Gift giving has never been as important in
Spain as in other countries. Children fill
their shoes with carrots and hay and put
them outside on Christmas Eve. The reason
for this is that they hope that Balthasar the
Black King will leave gifts in their shoes,
Sometimes the children would blacken
their faces with charcoal and in the morning
they would run and look in the mirror to see
whether King Balthasar had stopped to kiss
them before continuing his journey to
Bethlehem.
In some parts of Spain people place
candles on the edges of their roof or window
sills to symbolize the star that shone over
Bethlehem when Jesus was born.
The way we say Merry Christmas in
Spanish is Felices Pascaus.

AUSTRALIA
How would you like to spend Christmas in
the summer? In Australia you can!
Since Australia is located opposite of us in
the world, our cold months are their warm
months. This would mean that December
and January would be Australia's warmest
months.
Seeing as the weather is so warm, flowers
bloom. One flower is called the "Christmas
Bell". It blooms in December, with a burst
of red, shaped like a bell. Imagine Oat,
flowers during Christmas, in December.

Nativity Sets and wreaths are not a
popular ornament. After dinner families go
to church and watch and enjoy choir pro-
grams and plays. All celebrating the Holy
Child's birth: Afterwards, choirs visit
homes bringing Japanese hymns and
western Christmas songs sung in Japanese.
December 25 is a working day and
although many Japanese celebrate
Christmas, the New Year Holidays are
thought more important.

JOUEUX NOEL
- MERRY CHRISTMAS
Do your mom and dad let you stay up on
Christmas even until midnight?
If you lived in France, your parents would
let you. At midnight it is a tradition in
France that the church bells ring and you go
to midnight mass. After mass they hurry
home for a Christmas dinner.
When you're finally finished your first
course, there is a special dessert waiting. It
is 'called a "Christmas Log." The Christma.,
log is chocolate cake rolled up in whipped
cream with candy mushrooms and elves on
top.
When you're all finished your meal it is a
tradition to put your empty shoes on the
doorstep or by the fireplace. .The Christ
Child is to appear and put gifts in the
children's . shoe. The Christ Child is a girl.
She wears a crown of candles and carries a
basket of gifts for the children.
