BEAUTIFUL GIFT IDEAS FOR HIM & FOR HER.,, CAMPBELL'QF GODERICH...BEAUTIFUL GI Oh, What A Beautiful Way to say HaveA Merry Christmas BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE 2 The use of classrooms by up to three 7. = grades at three Catholic schools in Huron- Perth will be investigated by the separate o school board. u The approval to investigate was made by cn the Huron -Perth Roman Catholic Separate School Board after it received 17 letters from parents whose children attend St. Joseph's Catholic school in Kingsbridge. The parents were speaking against having three grades put into one classroom. At the ._J Kingsbridge school, Kindergarten and n Grade 1 students are in the same classroom, L' - Grade 2 and 3 students share a classroom, Grade 4, 5 and 6 students share one < classroom and so do Grades 7 and 8. There w are five classrooms in the rural school, but m only four are used by the regular classes. There is also triple grading at .Ecole Ste. Marie and St. Columban separate school. Director of education William Eckert said the board's accommodation review commit- tee would look at the concerns of the parents. "It's a school accommodation organiza- tion problem and that's why it has been referred to that committee," said Mr. Eckert. Although not necessarily the ,same trustees, it was the board's accommodation review committee or more commonly known as the BAR committee that looked at the possibility of closing Ecole Ste. Marie or consolidating schools in Stratford. The board members on the committee are Vincent McInnes of Wingham, Dave Durand of St. Joseph's, Ron Marcy of Stratford, Ron Murray of RR 1, Dublin and Ernie V nderscott of RR 7, St. Marys. 'his is the same committee that will meet wit representatives of both the Perth and • Hu n Boards of Education regarding the holic board's plans for setting up a Catholic secondary school. In other business, the board approved the salary of the soon -to -be -hired superinten- dent of education ( French Immersion) for the coming years. The position will have a maximum principal's salary plus $3,000 for the first year and maximum principal's salary plus $6,000 for the second year and beyond. The current maximum principal's salary is $49,130. The position is now being advertised across the province with the expectation of starting on Feb. 1, 1985. The position was first advertised among the board's current staff. Affirmative Action fund established for boards U CE Lu 0 0 0 w 0 (1) J J w CO a U w Z cc LL G' 0 LL LL; The Ministry • of Education, in co- operation with the office of the Deputy Premier, has established an Affirmative Action Incentive Fund to encourage school boards to adopt affirmative action pro- grams, Education Minister Dr. Bette • Stephenson announced last, week: Dr. Stephenson said that under the pr gi am, the province will, in 1985 and 1986, pay school boards 75 percent of the cost of hiring an affirmative action co-ordinator up to a maximum of $20,000 ,for the first year they participate and $18,000 in the second year. School boards that already have affir- mative action programs will pot be eligible for a salary grant for their coordinator but will be eligible for funds to support special projects related to affirmative action. Dr. Stephenson said that she is concerned . about the relative absence of women in posi- tions of added responsibility' in Ontario's school system. "While over half i53 percents of full-time educators in Ontario's publicly supported schools are women, they represent only 14 percent of full-time principals and vice - principals. This is the case despite the fact that increasing numbers of women have . demonstrated that they Are not only in- terested in; but (ire qualified for, positions of added responsibility in our schools". "School board.; are in a unique position to • act as role models for their staff and students, as well as for their cofrununities. I am encouraged by the positive results which have been achieved by those boards which have implemented affirmative action pro- grams, and I am confident that 1 can count on all boards to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the goal of equal employment opportunity' for ifll women employees becomes a reality". Dr. Stephenson said that she has asked school boards to: • adopt a formal policy of affirmative ac- tion for women employees: • appoint a senior staff member to develop - and co-ordinate an affirmative action plan, which would iderifiify goals and timetables for the hiring, promotion and -training of• women employeees at alvels, including both teaching and—rttrrFtea'chingstaff; • collect and analyze data on the occupa- tional and salary distribution of male and female staff, job competitions, projected vacancies, and staff training and develop- ment. Boards will also be asked to submit to the Ministry a report on Affirmative Action for Women Employees. The report will form, the basis of an annual report on affirmative action in school boards which will be tabled in the Legislature. \Yi I HERE SEE US FOR A FINE SELECTION OF COLOGNES, SOAPS, TALCS, SACHETS & BATH SALTS.
