Tinber check dams cora plete+d at f ar
Qt'er the years, constant clearing of land
for agricultural purposes and increasing tile
drainage, tion the area of Point Farms Provin-
cial Parkhas increased the rate of flow and
amounts of - Water moving in the area.
Serious flooding and erosion to those run-off
areas has resulted in large gullies and
ravines engulfing a:tremendous acreage of
land,
In 1983, Point Farms Provincial, Park was
chosen as the site for an expedmental pro-
ject designed to reduce the increasung
amount of soil being eroded away long'tne
gullies and streams within the park..-
A project, to constauct a Minter, of
"timber check dams", was initiated inthe
spring of 1984. The project created employ-
ment for a crew of five for 16 weeks. Fun -
ding of $28;586 was provided by Bnviron-
went 2000, an •]nironment Canada Pro-
gram concerned ,with • preserving, con-
serving and restoring the natural' environ-
ment. The project was sponsored by the
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority in
cooperation with the Ministry of Natural
Resources - Winglm District.
What is a timber check dam? A timber
check darn stands two - three feet in height
and is constructed of interwoven railway
ties across the stream. On either Slide of the
ddinn, large cribs four - five feet in height are
installed to provide a sound anchor for the
entire structure, Large stones or rip -rap are
installed by hand on either side and
downstream of the darn to prevent ex-
cessive erosion to the structure.
Eight other dams existed in the park, hav-
i
ing :been constructed on a previous Special.
Employment Program. Most of these dm*..
needed more work to be effective. Four :ad
ditional tuber dams were constructed in- ,.
areas . susceptible to erosion. these ,age
bends in he stream, long straight runs and#,,
elevation' drops where water builds up
speed, ultimately causing. severe erosion
problems.
What purpose does a "timber check dam"
serve? The creation of the small slow flow-
ing ponds upstream of the 12 timber check
dams will encourage the development of im-
proved aquatic habitat stimulating plant, in-
sect and wildlife growth. The timber check
dams along the stream will serve to slow
down the velocity of water and in turn,
decrease soil erosion.
