HOY
In loving memory of a dear father, Clarence Hoy,
who passed away December 23, 1980.
Without a farewell you fell asleep -
With only memories for us to keep.
From your hospital bed to heavenly rest
God took you home to be his guest.
You suffered so much, your pleasures -so few
You never deserved what you went through
You stood the task and stood it well, .,
Just what you suffered no one can tell.
Our hearts still ache with sadness
And silent tears still flow,
For what it meant to lose you, Dad,
No one will ever know.
Lovingly remembered by family and

The following is a year-end message from
Huron -Middlesex MPP Jack Riddell.
Many Ontarians are finding it a little dif-
ficult to "get into the Christmas spirit" this
year. 1984, now in its closing days, has been
a very tumultuous period - herein Canada
and throughout the world.
As an elected representative, I have found
that there have been times during the last 12
months when political life has been almost
too eventful - with a Federal Liberal Leader-
ship Campaign, a Federal election, a
threatened but ."cancelled -at -the -last-
minute" Provincial Election, followed
closely by five by-elections. All this "extra-
curricular" activity, superimposed on the
extremely busy period through which all
elected representatives are passing due to
the serious and complex problems faced by
Canadians in general and Ontarians in par-
ticular, : has made for • an extremely busy
year.
Yet, how our problems pale in comparison
with what has been going on around the
world - the senseless conflicts and war; the
'horror of political oppression; the heart -
wrenching tragedy of famine in Ethiopia
and other African countries; the agony" of
India with her political strife, involving ,
death and destruction, and the dreadful
fatalities of the Bhopal gas disaster; the
fearful dramas of international terrorism.
Traditionally at Christmas time we con-
centrate on the lighter side of life - the joy of
fellowship and good cheer, the eternal
message of the story of Nazareth, the hap-
piness of celebrating with our families and
friends.
This year there will, I think, be an added
poignancy fors s -all, a thread of sadness and
sympathy which will run through the
pleasures and gaiety of the festive season.
There will be times, I'm sure, when our
thoughts will turn to those less fortunate
than ourselves.
This year, the people of Ontario and
Canada, have perhaps more reason than
ever to count our blessings - the rights and
privileges of living in a democratic society
• in a country which is the envy of other na-
tions because of its incredible riches and
potential strength; the social services
"safety net" which helps Canadians to
weather difficult times; the ethnic diversity
which provide& such an abundance of
cultural pleasures; the bounty of the
agricultural sector which ensures that this
land of durs is not ravaged by famine.
The list of our blessings is well-nigh
endless and unquestionably our greatest
resource is the Canadian people - those who
have lived here for many generations and
those who have come here from across the
oceans of the world ... people who have
demonstrated a strength of spirit and a stur-
diness of purpose, combined with a
remarkable depth of feeling for those who
are experiencing special difficulties, - at
home and abroad.
We have much to be thankful for - much to
celebrate this Christmas of 1984 and
celebrate we shall, with our families, our
loved ones, our neighbours and friends.
No matter how difficult the time&, the age-
old story of Christmas, the promise given to
us in that baby "laid in the manger" all
those centuries ago, with all its attendant
joys,- the exchanging of greetings, gifts and
cards, the visiting and rejoicing, the magic
of the Christmas Services in our Churches,
the age-old hymns, anthems and carols - a
source of renewal, each and every year, and
perhaps the effects will be intensified this
year, because we are going through a
turnultuous period in history.
To each and every one of you, I extend my
sincerest good wishes . for a Happy
Christmas, filled to overflowing with the
bles6ings of love and fellowship. May the
New Year which is fast approaching be tru-
ly a time of renewal, bringing with it a
strong growth of peaceful forces throughout
the, world.
s
