CHRISTMAS DAY
(-December 25th
8:45 a.m. Holy Communion (said service)
-Unto us a Child is born: 0 come, let us worship -
By THE REV. JOHN D.M. WOOD,
BENMILLER-VICTORIA STREET
UNITED CHURCHES
"Christmas is more than a day at the end of
the year,
More than a season of joy and good cheer;
Christmas is really God's pattern for living
To be followed all year by unselfish giving...
But as soon as the tinsel is stripped from the
tree
The spirit of Christmas fades silently
Into the background of daily routine
And is lost in the whirl of life's busy scene.
But if we lived Christmas each day as we
should,
And made it our aim to always do good,
We'd know the great joy of peace upon earth
Which was the real purpose of ourSaviour's
birth.
For in the glad tidings of the first Christmas
night,
God showed us the way and the truth and the
light!"
Helen S. Rice composed this thoughtful
Christmas sonnet. It tchoes for us the cen-
trality of the incarnation. "The Word
became a human being and, full of grace
and truth, lived among us. We saw His
glory, the glory which He received as the
Father's only Son" (St. John 1:14 TEV ).
Let us make the following Advent prayer
our own:
0 God, w'e pause with aroused expectation
on the threshold of"yet another Christmas.
Make us sensitive to the sights and sounds of
the approaching birthday of the Christ
Child. The bustling shopping centres may
remind us of the crowds which filled the
MINISTER'S STUDY
streets of Bethlehem and stretched accom-
modation at the inns and the spare rooms in
private homes.
The emergency sign in front of a hospital
may remind us of the rough entry of a gentle
child into a world of traditional memories
and contemporary crises. The coming and
going of neighbours an friends and the pil-
ing up of gifts under a Christmas tree may
remind us of the happy, curious, wondering
people who visited a child in a stable.
We pray for those who feel themselves to
be more than a lonely crowd of punch -holes
in a computerized census. We pray for those
who are walking through the frightening
dark and do not have a star to guide them.
We pray for those who have lost their sense
of wonder and expect no new idea and who
have long ago stopped asking questions. We
pray for those who have put Christ and His
church on their "no room" list and who
stumble on alone to face the futility of a
future without purpose.
We thank You for joyous imaginations
which help us to celebrate again the coming
of Christ into our world. By this recurring
festival we know that You have come to be
with us in our homes, offices, farms, chur-
ches, shopping plazas and places of recrea-
tion. Be with us at our Christmas worship
and celebration when crib and cross remind
us of Your inexpressive gift of love and so
real through the giving, living and re -living
of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
