The town of Goderich will be embarking on an ambitious bank stabilization pro- gram with the Maitland Valley Con- servation Authority over the next several years. At its December 10 meting, council en- dorsed a motion authorizing , in principle, a long-term shoreline protection strategy for the town. The project, utilizing the silt from the harbour dredging project, may create an area in excess of 25 acres south of the water treatment plant. Representatives of the MVCA suggest that the clay and silt from the harbour deredging project could be dumped in the area south of the water plant to create a 26 -acre beach area. The proposal was borne out of the MVCA's study of bluff stabilization along an 18 km. stretch of shoreline. The crea- tion of the relaimed area, contained by a retaining wall, would aid in stabilizing the bluff area on the southern edge of town. The federal government is also willing to dump the clay and silt material from the harbour in the area. While it won't be that costly to transport and dump the material, the cost of a re- taining wall is estimated at $1 million. MVCA authorities said the projectwould be subject to about 85 per centtgrants with the town having to produce $150,000 for the project. The project will be. phased over three or - four years but 10 to 15 per cent of the dredging could be completed in the next calendar year. The motion of council calls flu the authority to obtain approvals from the pro- vince for funding; the town would con- tribute $3,750 to the design engineering costs of the project and that the town would proceed in phases with the shoreline protection project as outlined by the MVCA, pending municipal funding as determined at budget time. Don Wheeler, council's representative on the authority, will be council's representative on the shoreline project. Both the provincial and federal govern- ments will conduct environmental assessments of the projects and no doubt, water quality will be a concern.
