You certainly have to give credit to the)
United Empire Loyalists. They celebrated
Ontario's Bicentennial inlaunched one of
The group successfully
the most ambitious and impressive projects
of the Bicentennial year and realized a great
dream with the publishing of the book, Loyal
She Remains.
Loyal She Remains, the translation of the
motto of the Province of Ontario, is a com-
prehensive and colourful pictorial and nar-
rative history of the great province.
The book is not merely a tribute to
Loyalists and their stormy beginnings that
date back to 1784 when as many as 8,000 col-
onials headed north and adopted the tag
Loyalists. Rather, it is a most compelling
and comprehensive history of the province,
its people, the pioneers, the trials and
tribulations of its heritage.
Loyal She Remains is almost 700 pages
containing 31 distinct chapters that deal
with every aspect of life in Ontario history.
The hard -cover book is also tastefully and
carefully illustrated by over 1,000
photographs and maps.
The book was co-authored by Charles
Humber, a former teacher and past -
:president of the United Empire Loyalists,
whose ancestry dates back to some of the
first European settlers of North America.
While Humber and his family are much a
part of the history of the province, he also
has family connections with the town of
Goderich. He has visited here many times
and his father, Dr. Charles Humber, was
born and educated in Goderich and his
grandfather, Charles . H. Humber was a
jeweller and town councillor for more than
20 years.
Even his great-grandfather, (you guessed
it) Charles A. Humber, was a police
magistrate as well as a mill-wright and
jeweller from the 1860s until his death in
1907.
The co-author told the Star in a conversa-
tion that he has been surrounded by
Goderich memoribilia all his life and many
Goderich related items can be found within
the 32 chapters of the book. Mr: Humber's

Charles Humber
grandfather died in 1943 and he is anxious to -
correspond with anyone who was familiar
with the Humber family, particularly his
father and grandfather. He would especially
appreciate a picture of the family jewellery
store on The Square.
The idea of the book was simply that, an
idea,,before Humber made a move in 1983 to
line up an impressi- e list of authors that in-
cluded noted historian Michael Bliss and
former Ontario Liberal Party leader Robert
Nixon. •
But the success and perhaps most unique
aspect of the book is the fact that 103 Ontario
companies paid almost $500,000 or a $5,000
per page fee, to have their company history
documented in the book. That corporate
sponsorship and partnership ensured the
printing of the book. Included among the
company histories is a detailed story on
Champion Road Machinery of Goderich.
The book is selling copies by the
thousands despite the price tag m excess of
$50 but profits are chanelled back into ef-
forts to preserve the province's history.
The book is indeed a special prodcut of the
Bicentennial and the first copy off the press
was preserved in a special case and later
presented to Queen Elizabeth IL Pope John
Paul was; also presented with a copy t; g
the Papal,Tour in September.
Both presentations were made on r " half
of the people of Ontario. :mow s
While the book is revered as a major
historical work, its success has been a
source of fund-raising for many dtaittable
groups, organizations and service. ,Globs.

Three big
issues face
board in
coming year
Ronald Marcy, 48, of Stratford, was
elected chai.man of the Huron -Perth
Roman Catholic Separate Board Nov. 3.
He defeated immediate past vice-
chairman Michael Moriarity of RR 2, -
• Bayfield and Tim McDonnell of RR 2, Gad-
; - shill for the position.
Mr. Marcy has been chairman of the
finance committee as well as the board ac-
commodation review committee. He
previa 1y served as board chairman in
1980 fo owing a year as vice-chairman.
On of two Stratford representatives on
th separate school board, Mr. Marcy is
th head of the math department at Nor-
thwestern Secondary School in Stratford.
Mr. Marcy said the three big issues to be
dealt with by the separate school board
over the coming year are implementing
the French Immersion program in
Goderich and Stratford, making a deciison
regarding a Catholic secondary school in
the system and working on the recommen-
dations about the separate school board
made by the ministry of education' earlier
'this year. :
Trustee Vincent McInnes of the
Wingham area was elected as vice-
chairman of the board. He too defeated
Mr. McDonnell and Mr. Moriarity for the
vice -chairmanship.
The immediate past chairman is Ron
Murray of RR 1, Dublin.
For the first time, the separate school
board as a whole elected the chairmen of .
the three standing committees. Previously
the individual committees elected the
chairman.
Mr. Murray was acclaimed as chairman
of the finance, policy and bylaw commit-
tee.
Ernie Vanderscott of RR 7, St. Marys
was named as chairman of the personnel
committee.
