bicentennial medals awarded Sunday
Fifty-five people from across Huron and
Perth were presented with their bi-
centennial awards at a special ceremony
in Seaforth on Sunday, Dec. 9.
The Ontario government sent Hon.
Robert Eaton and Hon. Dennis Timbrell to
present the awards at the ceremony.
This ceremony was one of more than 30
being held across the province on Sunday
to present the 1,984 medals awarded in this
bi-centennial year.
"To -day's recipients are truly represen-
tative of the hundreds of thousands of
other volunteers who share our apprecia-
tion for their valuable service," said Mr.
Eaton.
There were 30 a cards made to Huron
County residents and 7.5 to Perth County
residents.
Lise Hawley of Strathroy sang the bi-
centennial song after the awards were
handed out.
The medals were speci,;tstruck by the
Royal Canadian Mint using a process
which plates a layer of pure gold on a
nickel base. All of the ingredients in the
medal are Ontario resources.
Not all meetings will be at town hall
A motion calling for all committee
meetings to be held in council chambers
was defeated by council in a recorded vote.
The motion, introduced by Jim Searls,
suggested that all meetings of committees
of council be held in the council chambers.

voted in favor of the motion.
In speaking to the motion, Bill Clifford
suggested it was not always convenient or
feasible to • hold committee meetings in
council chambers. •
"Sometimes there are three meetings
going on in different parts of the building,"
he said. "The public knows where these
meetings are held through Civic Corner •
and it's not always convenient to meet
here."
At least 90 per cent of the meetings are
held in the council chambers anyway
councillor Glen Carey argued adding that
other committees dealing with specific
areas of expertise, like airport, often met
at the airport.
"I would hate to see all committees meet
here because it would tie our hands forever
after," he explained. "But I don't think
that is what this motion is trying to get at."
Councillor Don Wheeler filled in the
blanks and suggested the motion was an
attempt to put a stop to lunches on town
money.
"Some people have a propensity for
making regulations to solve problems," ite.
explained. "The motion is getting at meals
on the town. In all the years I've been on
council I can count the number of meals
I've had on the fingers of one hand. I'm
opposed to regulations."
"My point got across," Searls said.
