Most of it is for gift -giving. Here are some pointers from the experts if you are shopping for a camera as a gift. •How serious about photography is the person you are gifting? If he or she sends serious signals, consider one of the several 35 millimeter single lens reflex cameras on the market. An SLR such as the AE -1 Pro- gram is a camera the beginner can grow with. Start simple. Add lenses and ac- cessories for more sophisticated photos. On the other hand, if you are getting a camera for a now -and -then snapshooter who only wants to record special occasions such as v,acations and Christmas parties, check outran easy-to-use pocket camera like the ne Snappy from Canon. • How important are the results? There's a simple. rule in photography: Other things being equal, the bigger the negative, the bet- ter the resulting print. Thirty-five millimet r is the largest size available in popular c eras. In a camera such as the new Canon appy 5 millimeter film will produce sharp, . ar prints 8 x 10 inches and larger. That's difficult to do with smaller size film. • Easte-of-operation. If you give someone a camera that's difficult to use, they're more likely to be frustrated than -pleased. Features to look for are automatic film loading, advance and rewind and a wide range of shutter speeds which will make pic- tures possible under most lighting condi- tions. •Kindsof subjects. If your photo fan is likely to be interested in action photography such as sports, make sure the camera you select has the ability to stop action. That means a fast shutter speed —1/1000th of a second in the SLR or 1/500th capability in a pocket camera. • •Manufacturer's reputation. This counts no matter what you are buying at any time of the year: When it comes to cameras, check on the status of the manufacturer with professional photographers. If the maker of the camera you are,co l : f ering heavily involved with a major forts acti i- ty such as the Olympics or the S f : Bo 1, you can bet they are serious about the • i. uip- ment they make for professionals and this will be reflected in what they produce for amateurs.
