Christmas
collage is easy
A "collage" for Christmas, easy to make
and costing only a few dollars, presents an
attractive centerpiece for the festive board.
Following the family holiday dinner, it can
be mounted on a wall or placed on a
sideboard as an added decoration during the
12 days of Christmas. -
A holiday creation of an arts and crafts
department of a school, the centerpiece can
be made with inexpensive materials that
are usually found around the house. It can
be completed in an hour or two and stored
away for next year.
Household glue, paint, paper doilies,
drinking cups, 3 sizes of tree decorations
and, believe it or not, drinking straws are
the magic supplied for an artistic effort.
Easy -to -follow directions require simply
covering a 15 -inch square of smooth
masonite or beaver board with flat white
paint. When it dries, glue on three straws in
each of the four corners, 6 inches for the
long and 41/2 inches for the short lengths.
Glue 6 -inch doilies to the four outer sections,
between the straws.
Then, spray the entire board with a
desired color of aerosol paint or enamel.
Vary the tones of the coating by making the
edges of the board darker. Allow enough
time to dry. •
Glue eight 2 -inch star decorated paper
cups in a circle and place small ornaments
in the spaces between. Place four cups on
the second tier and secure one upright in the
center. Glue medium sized ornaments in all
the cups but the upright which should have
one twice as large. Two small ornaments
may then be glued together between the
cups on the second tier.

Pets for gifts
A living gift brings love and affection long
after Christmas Day. Whether it's finned,
feathered or furry, a pet can be the most ap-
preciated present any member of the family
could receive. For youngsters, the gift of a
gerbil or hamster allows them to learn to ac-
cept responsibility as they take care of their
new charge. And, small pets can be endless-
ly entertaining when the gift includes a
special "habitat" the animals can explore
an turn into permanent living quarters.
or an older person, pets bring compa-
ton'ishjp as well a5 a measure of safety. For
the senior citizen who's active and has some
time to spare, a•dog might be just the thing.
If he's house -bound with a lot of time to
devote to a hobby, the senior might enjoy
fish -keeping. Many pet shops offer starter
kits that include everything anyone could
need for their first fish tank.
Birds add a little spring to the house all
year round. If the recipient wants to spend
time. taming and training a Cockatiel or
Mynah, for example, they'll find themselves
with an entertaining pet who can talk, per-
form tricks, and perk up every day of the
week.
