here in September, recently expanded its services to include an
Alcohol Information Centre. The new service was kicked off with
an open house last Wednesday. About 25 people attended. The staff

Centre adds new dimension to
services of counselling program
The Alcohol Educational and Counselling
Program, operated m Goderich under the
sponsorship of the Addiction Research
Foundation of Ontario, has added a new
dimension to the services offered to area
residents.
An open house, held Wednesday,
November 28, marked the opening of the
Alcohol Information Centre. The informa-
tion centre is located in the same office and
run by the same staff that operate the
counselling program.
The centre is open daily, from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m, to anyone interested in obtaining
alcohol-related information.
The counselling program, which got
underway as of September i; will continue
as before, and Paula Pranovi, a counsellor,
stresses the two operations are separate, so
access to • the infarnation centre is not
• restricted to participants of the counselling
program.
UNIQUE PROJECT
The counselling service is unique, says
Project Director Norman Giesbrecht,
because it is prevention oriented and aimed
at early-stage problem drinkers.
The project is set up mainly for people
who have had "no contact with police or
health authorities," says Giesbrecht.
However, they may be experiencing pro-
blems with their spouses, at work, or driv-
ing after drinking, he added.
An important distinction between this pro-
gram and most other programs aimed at
combating alcohol abuse, is that par-
ticipants need not necessarily admit to be-
ing alcoholics.
Warren Ham
will carry
NDP hopes
in election
New Democrats have to work to humanize
the technological revolution says provincial
deputy leader Jim Foulds.
Port Arthur MPP Foulds spoke on jobs,
technological change and the economy at
t1 ° Perth New Democrats nomination
meeting: Warren Ham of R.R. 2, Staffa was
named as the party's provincial candidate.
"While it is true that technological change
can relieve mankind from a lot of mind -and -
soul -numbing labor ... it is also true there's
not much use in replacing one kind of soul-
destroying labor with a different kind," said
MPP Foulds.
He said society has to use technological
change to free humanity rather than having
society chained to these changes.
"To do that we as NDP must keep our
concerns for tie rights and dignity of the in-
dividual constantly before us at all times,"
the deputybotise leader said.
Mr. Foulds said reduced working time is a
serious issue that the NDP has to put on the
legislative and political agenda. He says
technological change allows for the reduc-
tion of the work week.
"We know what the arguments against us
will be. The argument will be very simple -
there is no way to pay for reduced work
time," said the MPP.
He believes it can be paid for from in-
creased productivity and increased profits
which comes from introducing these
changes. The reduced work time can also be
paid for from savings from welfare and
unemployment payments that are
eliminated by job sharing and creation. It
can also tie paipaid for by collecting the $3
billion in unpaid corporate sector taxes ow-
ed to the provincial government said Mr.
Foulds.
"Our program of shorter work time,
voluntary early retirement, bridging pen-
sions, . retraining and advance notice of
technological change is a start and
neeessaary must," he said.
"It's most appropriate for people who
would not accept the label `alcoholic'," said
Giesbrecht. "And they shouldn't, because
they probably aren't," he added.
ONE-TO-ONE
The program provides individual
counselling, on a one-to-one basis, said
Pranovi. It involves one hour-long session
per week, for seven weeks
Discussion is the main t in the pro-
gram, says Pranovi a couse or and the
participant discuss previous drinking ex-
periences, drinking patterns, and plans for
dealing with the urge to drink in upcoming
weeks. All information is confidential.
In addition, participants are assigned
reading material and view a series of video-
tapes developed specifically for the pro-
gram.
The service is provided free to the .partici-
pant and is funded by the addiction research
foundation.
Giesbrecht says support for the fledgling
program from community leaders and pro-
fessionals has been good. Reaction from
participants has been positive, adds
Pranovi.

However, the program has not done a
high-volume of work so far.
"Doing something about problem drink-
ing, in the early stages is a relatively new
ide&," says Giesbrecht.
"It takes time for people to get used to the
idea," added Pranovi.
Pranovi said the program is not in com-
petition with services such as Alcoholics
Anonymous. "We're just providing an alter-
native."
