Vikes win Huron -Perth
Senior Vikings roll to
championship with two
wins over Stratford
The GDCI Senior Vikings won the Huron -
Perth Conference' Senior girls basketball
championship, by defeating Stratford Nor-
thwestern Huskies two games to none last
week.
It is the first Senior Girls basketball
championship for Goderich since 1969. The
Vikes completed an undefeated season at 13-
0, with decisive 57-48 and 63-34 victories over
Stratford.
In Tuesday's game, the Vikings overcame
foul trouble and a slim 27-26 lead at half-
time, to go ahead by as much as 18 points in
the second half, as they applied defensive
pressufe on the Huskies. , •
The Vikes were led by the inspired play of
their captain Kim Fritzley, who scored 38
points and made many excellent offensive
and defensive plays. Christine Stapleton ad-
ded. 10 points, Mary Alexander and Anne
Allan four each and Cathie Gallow had one
point.
On Thursday, the GDCI gymnasium was
packed with over 600 cheering fans, as the
Vikes overcame some early nervous play, to
comletely dominate the Huskies. The
Goderich girls trailed 12-11 at the 'end of the
first quarter and were down by as many as
eight points during the first half.
But the Vikings determined team play
lead them 'to a 23-14 half-time lead. The
Vikes stretched their lead to 47-25 by the end
of three quarters.
Fritzley was once again the leader, as her
floor play showed she is a complete basket-
ball player. Her passes and key offensive re-
bounds were excellent and resulted in her
scoring 21 points.
Allison Graham added 10 points, as well
as fine ballhandling and timely rebounds.
Cathie Gallow played excellent defence and
scored nine points. Anne Allan played
another great game and scored nine points
as' well.
Christine Stapleton played will under the
basket and added six points. Mary Alex-
ander played a good game, sinking two
tough outside shots. Joanne Campbell and
Jennifer Peters each added a basket. •
"The Vikings have played with pride and
poise," say coach Phil Bugler. They have
won 28 games against six losses in league
and tournament play this year. They take
this fine record into the WOSSA "AA"
championships, which are being held in
Goderich this weekend..

GDCI Junior Vikings wiii fourth
consecutive Huron -Perth title

The GDCI Junior Vikings won the
Huron -Perth Conference girls basketball
championship, by defeating the Mitchell
Blue Devils in two straight games.
The Vikings took the first game in the
best -of -three series by a 47-38 score in
Mitchell last Tuesday and then won the
championship on their home court by
defeating the Devils 33-27 Thursday.
The Championship is the fourth hi a row
for the Vikings. Coach Lynn Meyers' team
went undefeated in Huron -Perth play this
season, winning ten league games enroute
to the title. Over the four-year span, the
Junior Vikings have lost -only two times
against Huron -Perth opponents.
The Mitchell team proved to be a worthy
opponent for the Vikings in the finals. Both
games were well -played and the outcome
of both were in doubt until late in the
final quarter.
In Thursday's game here, it looked as
though the Devils would force the series to
a third and deciding game, when they
jumped all over the Vikings for an 18-2 lead
by the early minutes of the second quarter.
The Vikings began a come -back in the
second quarter, but still trailed 25-14 at
half-time. At the end of the third quarter
the Devils lead had been shaved to one
point, 25-24 and the Vikings outscored
them 9-2 in the final quarter, to win by six
points. -
Mary Katharine Stapleton, the only
player on the floor to hit double figures,
had 10 points for the winners and played a
strong game under the basket. Katharine
Murphy's aggressive play netted her nine
points and Jenny Allen added six from
outside. Carol MacEwan and Erin
Robinson each had five points for the
winners.
For Mitchell, Julih Parkinson had eight
points, Kim Dietz had seven and Susan
Connolly and Betty Anne Deloyer had six
points apiece.
Tuesday, in the first game in Mitchell, it
was almost a reversal of form. It was the
Vikings who used the press early to lead
.14-6 after one quarter.
Goderich led 25-18 at the half, but
Mitchell got their game going in the third
quarter, when they outscored the Vikings
15-7, to take a 33-32 lead. Again, the
Vikings proved themselves to be a fourth-
quarter team, by pooping 15 points and
holding the Devils to just five.
Katharine Murphy played an
outstanding game. for Goderich, with 17
points.
Mary Katharine Stapleton added 14
points and Carol MacEwan had 10. Jenny
Allen, with six points, was the only other
Viking to stretch the twine.
Susan Connolly was Mitchell's top
scorer, with 11. Kim Dietz and Carol
Terpstra had eight apiece.
Members of the 1984 Junior Viking
Championship team include: Jenny Allen,
Debbie Doak, Robin Engelstad, Carol
MacEwan, Katharine Murphy, Susan
Murphy, Erin Robinson, Mary Katharine
Stapleton, Vickey Vanderburgh and Pam
Wilkinson.
The Junior Vikings will represent the
Huron -Perth Conference in. the WOSSA
championships, this weekend. Huron -
Perth is hosting the tournament and the
games are being played in Exeter and
Goderich.
The Vikings meet Medway, of the
Middlesex Conference, Friday, in Exeter
at 5:30 p.m.
'1'he Winner will advance to the next
round, Saturday morning, i in Goderich.
Other Uonferences sending their top teams
to the WOSSA tournament are London,
Oxford, Elgin and Sarnia.
