Whaleback Steamer Atikoken unloading grain at Goderich
Atikoken has embarrassing
accidents during its service
BY SKIP GILLHAM '
1 recently came across an old photo of the
whaleback steadier Atikoken unloading
grain at Goderich and.I thought it would be
of interest to area residents.
Many readers will remember later
whale.backs coming to port. These included
the barges Alexander Holley and the No. 137
as well asthe popular John Ericsson.
The whalebacks were products of the in-
• ventive genius of Captain Alexander
McDougall. Some were barges while others
were bulk carriers.' One, the Christopher
Columbus, was a passenger vessel.
Atikoken was launched May 1, 1895, by the
American Steel Barge Company of West
Superior, Wisconsin. Named John B. Trevor
at the time, she entered service by the end of
May and worked at the, transportation of ore
and coal.
Her early years were spent in the service
of me tunerican ateei barge Lompany anci
then she joined the Bessemer Steamship Co.
in 1900. This firm was one of many to par-
ticipate in the formation of the Pittsburgh
Steamship Company in 1901 with the
establishment of United States Steel.
On, October 13, 1909, the Trevor stranded
on Isle Royale during a mid-October
snowstorm. The winds whipped at 65 miles
per hour and the ship was abandoned safely.
This was not the first embarrassing acci-
dent to hit this ship nor the last. On August
10, 1899, she was rammed and sunk by the
barge she was towing on the St. Clair River.
Later, on August 17, 1913, she went aground
at Marine City, Michigan, and damaged
some buildings. She went a considerable
distance up the bank before coming to an
abrupt stop.
In 1910 the John B. Trevor was salvaged
from Isle Royale and a year later was
rebuilt by the Western Drydock Co. at Port
Arthur. ttenamed Atikoken, bile returned to
service in the Canadian grain trade: This
brought her to Goderich and thanks is ex-
tended to Mrs. E; Lounsbery and Ron Davis
for providing this vintage photo by Shaw.
Atikoken passed from the Canadian' Nor-
thwest Steamship Co. in 1917 to the Montreal
Transportation Co. In 1920 she joined
Canada Steamship Lines.
She worked for this latter firm on the St.
Lawrence and Canadian east coast much of
the time and was sold to the Dominion Iron
and Steel Company in 1925. They kept her in
similar wort
The veteran freighter lasted another
decade and was cut up for scrap at Halifax
in 1935.
Statistically, Atikoken was 362 feet long
(110.34 metres) and was registered at 2,004
gross tons. She hauled over 3,100 tons per
trip. An 1,100 horsepower triple expansion
engine served her entire career.
