HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1984-11-21, Page 9r, The summation of a great law BY THE REVEREND G.L, ROYAL, KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Every -now -and -then, it is our custom to recite the Ten Commandments with responses in a Service of Praise. This reminds us of The Great Law Moses brought down from the mountain. We are refreshed in the things that make. for a good society, a good culture and a good citizenry. In St. Matthew 22:35-40 we find a summation of this great law as propounded by Jesus Christ. He resolves it all into two categories, love God, and love your neighbour as yourself. A nation` built on these great principles, if such were possible, would be a paradise -on -earth. MINISTER'S STUDY Christ calls upon us to love God the Father. It is a return of love to One who im- mensely loves. When weprobe the Creation Story in Genesis, we come up with many human observations. We can say to the question, "Why did God create us?", that God was so filled with love that He sought to resolve His sublime loneliness with the creation of friends. With these friends He sought communion, contact and conversation, or, to use one word, fellowship. We were meant to live freely with Him in an oasis of warmth and gentleness. We were made to be free. This freedom became our bane for it led us to revolt against the Divine. Despite our sin, God as Father continues to love. He can- not and will not remove His love for He is God. In the fullness of time, Jesus Christ came forth into the dilemma of humanity. This Incarnation is the revelation of that love that cannot die or cease to be. God con- tinues to love that which has sinned against Him. He desires us to come home. He seeks in Christ to restore in newness the ruptured relationship. The beautiful thesis of St. John 3:16 is revealing, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." In St. Matthew 22, Christ is telling us that the believing Christian will return this love with the fullest human love to God, is Father. It is when we realize God's love in faith and trust through Jesus Christ and His atonement that we are enabled to love Him back. Our greatest difficulty is accepting His acceptance of us; this can only be done Victim of child abuse to speak at Pentecostal Assembly in Goderich The Reverend Maury Blair, executive. director of Toronto Teen Challenge, will be the guest speaker at Bethel Pentecostal Assembly ' in Goderich on Sunday,, November 25 at both the morning and even- ing services. Surviving a traumatic childhood of neglect and savage abuse, Maury Blair was loved, changed and led by God towards an exciting ministry for youth in Toronto. Toronto Teen Challenge was started in 1966. It has now grown into a Canada -wide ministry known as Breakthrough Youth Ministries. Rev. Blair, who has been nominated for a Bicentennial Award for volunteer work in Mississauga, will give his testimony of how God healed his bitter childhood and allowed him to use that experience to help others. He is the author of the best-selling book, Child of Woe. The Reverend Gerry MacMillan invites you to come and hear Rev. Blair this Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Bethel Pentecostal Assembly on Bayfield Rdad. This is your . chance to hear how God's love can over- come the worst childhood any person could have! when we have experienced.His-rove within our faith. The second aspect of the summation regards our neighbour. This proves much more difficult. There are people we like, and there are people we 'don't like. Sometimes hate enters our picture and we find ourselves at heart injured. When Christ equates the first and second aspects of sum- mation, we have to take a second look at our love as it regards God. How can we love God, and hate our neighbour? In the view of Jesus Christ, this ought to be impossible. It is. If we love God, then we must surely love what God loves. God loves "the world" (St. John 3:16) and this means He loves every human creature. He is not an exclusivistic God; loving one and discard' g another, His love flows out to all; He 1 e the Ethiopian as He does the Anglo-Saxon; all are one in His eyes. This points up a oneness in humanity which should draw us together. It is not idealism, triteness nor naive nerve; rather, it is truth, the very truth of God. Loving one's neighbour means taking seriously our place as Christians as we meet and deal with all manner of peoples. They all belong to God. Instead of seeing the Rus- sian as an enemy, ought we not to see him/her as children of the same God? Is this not what is so seriously astray in our one-to- one relationships? When we are come to Christ as disciples, we take upon ourselves a deep responsibility for others, and these others mean everybody. We take on this responsibility because we have seen what God's love is all about; He loves "the world" for He made it and crafted it in love; thus, His Divine Expecta- tion is that all who come to Him in the Name of Jesus Christ will love what He loves, and this means "who" Hg loves. This is the high ground and only a complete and unadulterated faith can reach it. It cannot be attained through human strivings; it is only reached when God meets us, calls us and redeems us. It is only in Jesus Christ as Saviour that we can learn love for neighbour. . The foregoing is only a human effort in ex- pounding what love is in terms of Christ's summation. If it is only a start on the right and only road, well -and -good, for a start is what we require. Let us be about our Father's business!
