presentation
of Signal -Star
At the noon luncheon of the Goderich
Rotary Club held on Tuesday, Bruce
Thomasson reported on the club's outbound
exchange student, Wesley Delve, who is in
France. From' the letter received recently
from Wesley, it appears that he is having a
wonderful time.
Rotarian Howard Aitken gave a talk to the
club on Signal -Star Publishing. He was ac-
companied by John Buchanan, production
manager. A video presentation gave club
members an excellent insight into the work-
ings of the local newspaper.
The Huron Signal was established in 1848
and the Goderich Star was established in
1865. The original Huron Signal was the Grit
paper while the Star was the Tory paper.
The two papers amalgamated in 1938 to
form the Goderich Signal -Star.
In 1961, R.G. Shrier came to Goderich to
work at The Signal -Star as sales manager
with an eye to purchasing the paper from
publisher George Ellis. In 1965, Bob' and Joy
,Shrier became the new owners of Signal -
Star Publishing Ltd.
J. Howard Aitken joined the company in
1966 as a shareholder and vice-president.
The Clinton News -Record was purchased in
1967. Two years later, The Kincardine News
was purchased. In 1976, The Mitchell Ad-
vocate was acquired and in 1977, The
Lucknow Sentinel came under SSP owner-
ship. In 1982, the Huron Expositor at
Seaforth brought the company to its present
strength of six community newspapers.
The main part of the company's operation
is now located in an 18,900 square foot
building in the Industrial Park in Goderich
at the Community Centre in Holmesville.
The heat has been turned up, so come in out
of the cold for a social evening.
Goderich Township Recreation Board is
planning a Christmas Dance on December
1, featuring Jimmy Medd. Make a note to
call a board member for tickets soon. The
board meets the third Wednesday of every
month at the Community Centre in
Holmesville. These are open meetings so,
please come out if you have any input.
