If you're a new car buyer dickering on one
of those left -over '84 models, ask the
salesman to include an extra set of wind-
shield wiper blades in the deal.
This suggestion from Car Care Council is
based on the fact that the first parts likely to
need replacement on a new car are the
wiper blades. Sometimes they've lost their
wiping ability before the owner takes
delivery.
The rubber part of the blade "wears out"
more from the elements than from actual
use. When a car sits for a long period of time
on the dealer's lot, the natural rubber
deteriorates from the rays of the sun and
from contaminants in the air. The blades
turn brittle.
Even under normal conditions windshield
wiper blades have a life expectancy only
from six months to a year. After that period
they may begin to streak and smear.
In recent survey of 462 Automotive Ser-
vice Council members, these repair shop
owners reported car owners delaying wind-
shield wiper blade replacement for beyond
the safety point.
Their recommended replacement interval
was annual; but their customers are waiting
over twice that long to replace wiper blades,
most of them putting it off until the wipers
don't work.
Says the Council: Riding on that extra six
months of "borrowed time" can be a very
real safety hazard.

stains, grease and grime from these areas.
The next step is to wash the outside of the
car. Use warm water and a cleaner to
remove dirt, grime, salt and grease. Start
with the car's roof and finish with the
fenders and wheels.
Rinse and wipe the surface, proceeding
until the entire body of the car has been
washed. When the car is clean and has been
thoroughly rinsed, dry it with a chamois or
soft, clean cloth.
Now you're ready to give the car its pro-
tection against winter's elements with an
automotive polish. The choices include li-
qids and pre -softened paste.
Base your selection on the condition of the
car's finish — weathered or like -new. — and
the type of application you prefer.
Cleaner wax, a pre -softened paste, is
especially recommended for car finishes
that are like -new or slightly weathered. Li-
quid offers the protection and deep cleaning
of the pre -softened paste in an easy-to-use li-
quid form. Both have a high concentration
ui .quality waxes to provide outstanding
durability and gloss.
Whatever the product chosen, it's always
a good idea to carefully read and follow the
label instructions. Most can be applied in
sun or shade.
Remember, a little polish goes a long way,
and you'll only make the task aFtedious one
by being too generous with the polish.
For through cleaning, it is usually best to
work with firm, circular over -lapping
strokes. Rinse the applier occasionally in
clear water to removed picked up grit and
grime. Buff the dried polish using clean, dry
cloths.
Fold and turn these frequently as dried
product is picked up and exchange them for
clean ones as needed.
Finally, step back for a second critical
look at your car. Proud of its clean, good
looks? You should be! It's ready to stand up
to the elements no matter what winter
