:Katimavik offers valuable
experience to Canadians
The Katimavik youth program offers
young Canadians a number of things. A
chance to gain valuable work experience,
learn to live and work with a group of people
and an opportunity to grow up a little, before
making the transition from high schpol, to
the work force or post -secondary education.
These are just a few of the benefits listed
by the young men and women in the
Katimavik group currently spending three
months working and living in Goderich.
Goderich has been very receptive to the
program since its inception, in 1977. There
are presently, two groups in town, one group
of 11 participants is housed on Wolfe Street
and another group of seven reside on
Stanley Street. The current group consists
of participants from British Columbia,'
Alberta, Ontario and Quebec
The participants are involved in a variety
of projects around town. Some work as
teaching assistants in local schools. Others
work with the senior citizens at Maitland
Manor, with the developmentally handicap-
ped at Suncoast Enterprises, doing
maintenance work at the Huron County
Museum, or as tour guides at the lighthouse.
Their work here, provides a contrast to
the Wolfe Street group's last project, cutting
a hiking trail through a mountain forest in
British Columbia.
The program consists of three, three-
month segments, each spent in a different
area, with one segment spent in a fran-
cophone environment.
Quebec is the next stop and the final stage
of the program for the groups currently in
Goderich.

BV STEPHANIE LEVESQUE
The fate of the Huron County Pioneer
Museum won't be sealed until next year.
At its November session, Huron County
Council discussed behind closed doors for
over an hour,' a recommendation to
reconstruct the museum.
Once the doors to the council chamber
were re -opened, Warden Tom Cunningham
explained the decision to discuss the
museum without the public present would
provide councillors the opportunity for
"open and frank. discussion".
"I feel we had such," said the warden.
The decision reached in closed session
was to have the museum subject referred
back to the agriculture and property com-
mittee. The purpose of this, is to give
Huron's 26 municipalities time to discuss
the future of the museum at the local level.
The results of these individual
municipalities' discussion are to be sent to
county council no later than Dec. 15.
Warden Cunningham said many county
council members felt they didn't want to
make a decision on the museum until they
had discussed it with their councils.
Because of the warden's election on Dec.
11 and the fact that the next regular session
of county council is before Dec. 15 it will be
January, at the earliest, before the
museum's fate is determined.
The agriculture and property committee
is recommending that the county
reconstruct the museum over five years at
an estimated cost of $2.1 million.
The county's actual contribution for this
recommendation would be $1.5 million or
$300,000 a year for five years. The rest of the
project is expected to be financed from
grants, donations and other fund raising
sources if approved.
Amend bylaw
While the weekly flea market at the
Huron Historic Jail is gaining in popularity
among bargain hunters, it created traffic
and sight problems at the intersection of
Gloucester Terrace and Victoria Street.
At its last regular meeting, council
endorsed a recommendation from the
works committee that the traffic bylaw be
amended to prohibit parking on the north
side of Gloucester Terrace from the west
side of Victoria Street westerly for 44
metres and on the south side of the terrace
for 28 metres.
Acting on a recommendation from the
works committee council also agreed to
amend the traffic bylaw to ban
snowmobiles from sidewalks, boulevards,
foot paths, town parks and The Square.
