The Goderich Signal-Star, 1984-11-07, Page 2WHY I AM PROUD
TO WEAR A POPPY
As far as the -eye can see — poppies. Their
scarlet blossoms covering the vast fields.
The serenity of the emptiness is overwhelm-
ing. As they grow, they become the symbol
of bravery and courage.
I am proud to wear one of these poppies.
The poppy represents many things to me on
Remembrance Day: thoughts of war and
peace or quiet fields — scarlet in colour. As I
pin one of these flowers on me, I think of
many things.
Looking down on the precious blossom
fastened to my coat, I imagine the emotions
going through a mother's mind as her son
enlists. I can see her -worrying and staying
awake at night as the gunshots echo through
the night.
I can see that same mother wandering
through the rows of graves, stopping to view
her son's grave. I can see her eyes blurred
by tears, and I can see the poppies.
The poppies, so bright and colourful
sometimes haunt me. For they are the col-
our of blood, the blood the soldiers shed. I
try to imagine the feeling of war and I can
see the soldier going down. As I focus on his
wounds, the red brings me back to the reali-
ty of my poppy.
This is my poppy, and 1 am a child. The
radiance I feel from this scarlet creation
wasn't felt by the children during wartime.
For to them, red meant rage and hatred.
Red meant death and blood shed. Red
wasn't joyous remembering.
Today I feel the velvety exterior of the
crimson poppy and I block war out of my
mind. I feel the contour of the soft creation
and I see veterans deftly making them. I see
the pain in their eyes as they recall the way --------
from their past experiences. For -t110 are
making each poppy out of their pride in
themselves while remembering friends ly-
ing in fields and fields of the same crimson
red flowers. They are remembering the
peace and good times and blotting out the
war and bad tones.
With sorrow I remember this and with
pride I wear my. poppy. For the poppy is on-
ly a small part of a great thing — the
freedom this country has. I am proud to be
part of this freedom. I am proud to wear a
poppy.

$1,000 was donated to the Parkwood
Hospital Building Fund where a veterans
wing will be part of that hospital and $1,587.
was spent on veteran related medical ap-
pliances; meals and lodgings for transient
veterans cost the poppy fund $291.20. Each
of these expenditures of the Branch 109 Pop-
py Fund are as stipulated in the Legion Con-
stitution which re-evaluates how the Branch
Poppy Fund may be used.
A national remembrance service is con-
ducted by The Royal Canadian Legion with
the help of thefederal and municipal
governments, many organizations, and a
host of volunteers. It is nationally televised
by the CBC, which also produces a national
radio broadcast.
A Dominion Command Ceremonies
Committee organizes the ceremony, with
the participation of the Canadian Armed
Forces, Veterans Affairs Canada, Public
Works Canada, the Ottawa Police Depart-
ment, St. John Ambulance, Boy Scouts,
Girl Guides, the Dominion Carillonneur,
the Central Choir of the Ottawa Board of
Education and representatives of radio
and television.
The Silver Cross Mother, representing
Canadian Motherhood, and the senior win-

contests, are brought to Ottawa as guests
of the Legion to participate in the national
ceremony.
POPPY CAMPAIGN
The Royal Canadian Legion conducts a
poppy campaign each year prior to
Remembrance Day. All proceeds are plac-
ed in trust accounts and after expenses
(including the cost of poppies and
wreaths) are paid, the funds are used"to
assist needy Canadian ex -service person-
nel and their dependents, ex -service per-
sonnel of Commonwealth countries and of
allied countries resident in Canada.
Although the poppy campaign is national
in scope,,,each Legion branch is responsi-
ble for running its own campaign and col-
lecting and disbursing funds in its area.
Money is not deposited in a central fund.
In 1983, $2,652,076.00 was spent for the
benefit of ex -service personnel and their
dependents.
POPPIES AND WREATHS
• In 1983, 111/2 million poppies and 67,000
wreaths and crosses were distributed in
Canada. An additional 968,000 poppies
were sent to the West Indies to help -raise
funds for ex -service personnel and their
dependentsin their own -countries. -
All poppies and wreaths -are made in
sheltered workshops by disabled veterans,
or in homes by ex -servicemen and women
or their dependents.
