Teachers attend personal
workshop in Goderich
Teachers and their spouses from Perth,
Huron, Grey and Bruce counties attended a
very successful Personal Planning
Workshop on Friday evening and Saturday,
October 12 and 13.
The activities were held at Goderich
District Collegiate Institute and focussed on
the personal and financial aspects which
should be considered by an individual plann-
ing for retirement.
Psychological considerations were
presented by Dr. Havelka of King's College,
U.W.O. and alternatives to teaching were
discussed by Dr. John Marshall of Self -
Management Resources Incorporated, of
Toronto.
Other sessions included estate planning,
tax strategies and investment and savings
as well as addressing major concerns in life
planning and general financial and legal

planing to ensure a happy, well -adjusted
and secure retirement.
Sponsorship for the day was provided by
the Ontario Teachers' Federation and the
Teachers' Superannuation Commission
along with the local federation affiliates of
the Women Teachers' Associations, the On-
tario Public School Teachers' Federations,
the Ontario Secondary School Teachers'
Federations, the Ontario English Catholic
Teachers' Associations and the Superan-
nuated Teachers' of Ontario from Huron,
Perth, Bruce and Grey counties.
All sessions were well attended and com-
ments from participants were very positive.
Many expressed regret that such concen-
trated advice and direction had not been
available at an earlier stage in their lives,
but said they planned to use what they had
learned to best advantage in the years that
remained before retirement.
One -day courses offered on
practical skills at Guelph
Orchids may feed the spirit, but the body,
ah the body has other needs. Perhaps that is
why the University of Guelph is offering
one -day courses on wine, cheese and beer -
making in addition to a course devoted to
the most exquisite of flowers. The four
courses are part of a picogram, Practical
Skills for Town and Country, which the
University's Continuing Education Division
has especially developed to help people
become more self-sufficient. To enable par-
ticipants living at a distance from Guelph to
attend, the courses are held on Saturdays.
You can grow orchids under lights, on a
windowsill or in a greenhouse, and it's
easier than you think, according to Sarah
Mitchelmore, the specialist who is teaching
the course on November 3. In addition to
learning the basic growing techniques
necessary for getting started, participants
will be given literature and references for
future use in their horticultural efforts.
The three toodelated courses are all
taught by specia is from the University's
well-known FoodScience Department. On
November 10, Making -Wine From Concen-
trate covers the right techniques for making
good wine at home. Leave vinegar making
to others by properly learning about the
fermentation process, equipment,
materials, ingredients, bottling and storage.
Making Cheese, on November 17, covers
the different types of cheese, ancient and
modern methods of production, and the
practical aspects of home production. Lear-
ning how to make your own home brew, on
Noveinber 24, can be surprisingly simple.
Enrolment in some courses is limited. For
complete information or to register, contact
the Continuing Education Division,
Johnston Hall, University of Guelph,
Guelph, Ontario, N1G 2W1, or call (519)824-

Video will give better understanding of farming
What exactly. goes on behind the barn
door? People who aren't familiar with con-
temporary farm practices or who don't per-
sonally know any farmers might think
farmers are still milking their cows by hand
and piling hay with a pitch -fork.
To set the record straight, the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture presents "Behind
the Barn Door", a 13- minute video introduc-
ing non -farmers to the farm practices and
practitioners of the 1980's. The film is nar-
rated by Gordie Tapp, host of the television
program "Hee Haw". Tapp has been mak-
ing people laugh with what he calls his
"bucolic buffoonery" for years. In the
video, he gives his viewers ,a different look
at the "agricultural engineers."
