Goderich Lions Pee Wees
prosper despite hectic
The Goderich Lions PeeWees, pinned
Wath a hectic opening week schedule of five
gmes, in eight nights; have come out of
this successfully with four wins and one
loss, to give them a good season start.
After two opening night victories against
can, the Lions travelled to Exeter last
Wednesday, where they suffered their only
loss by a score of 6-2. The game was tied at
two after two periods with the locals on
many good scoring chances. Then to start
the third period the Lions were handed
four penalties in three minutes, while Ex-
eter tallied three times, to take a comman-
ding lead. Chris O'Neill and Jeff Hodges
were the goal scorers for Goderich, with
assists going to Lonnie Rumig and Andre
Cauchi.
In the Lions' next two games, they made
the most of their scoring chances, this time
by scoring 19 times, for wins of 10-5 against
Parkhill and 9-5 over St. Marys.
At Parkhill Friday, .the line . of Andre
Cauchi, Jeff Hodges and Chris O'Neill had
12 scoring points to lead the offence.
Cauchi had two goals, three assists;
O'Neill, two goals, two assists and Hodges
two goals, one assist. Other pointgetters in
this contest were: Tirn Harrison, one goal,
two assists; Sean O'Brien, one goal, one
assist: Brian Lane, one goal, one assist
and Shawn Talbot, one goal.
At home Saturday, against St. Marys, it
was the line of Tim Harrison, Sean O'Brien
and Brian Lane, that took charge as they
notched 10 scoring points with Harrison
getting one goal, four assists; Lane, two
goals, one assist and O'Brien, two goals.

Junior Vikings drop game
to Norwell Redmen 16-7
BY TD
The GDCI Junior Vikings lost to the
Neirwell Redmen last Thursday, in
Palmerston in Huron Perth football action,
16 - 7.
The loss leaves the Vikings with a record
of three wins and two losses going into their
final league game here Thursday, against
the undefeated Wingham Madill Mustangs.
The Vikings will make the playoffs
whatever the outcome of Thursday's game,
but the outcome could be a good indication
of how far the young Vikings may go in post
season play.
Against Norwell, the Vikings got off to a
good start by scoring on their first posses-
sion. Bill Trebish went over for the
touchdown on a six yard sweep. Shawn
Larder kicked the convert.
Following the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings
held Norwell deep in their own end and forc-
ed them to punt, but a broken play gave
Novices win
6-5 squeaker
Friday night
Norwell a first down. That seemed to be a
turning point in the game.
Norwell moved the ball well and scored a
touchdown which, along with a two-point
conversion, gave them an 8 - 7 lead, which
held up until the final minute of the game.
The Redmen added an insurance marker
when they scored again in the dying seconds
.and got another two-point conversion.
Except for Bill Trebish's 181 yards on 36
carries, the Vikings were unable to generate
much offence. After stringing a couple of
first downs together, they would be forced to
punt. This was not a strong aspect either,
since the Vikings were netting an average of
only twenty yards per punt and were finding
themselves with continually bad field posi-
tion.
The Redmen had a size advantage over
the Vikings and were able to control the line
of scrimmage, enabling them to come up
with the big play at opportune times.
Goderich Novices won one and lost one, in
Shamrock League hockey action on the
weekend. After winning a 6-5 squeaker in
Parkhill- Friday night, the local boys
dropped a 7-4 game to St. Marys, in
Goderich on Saturday.
Friday night, the score stood knotted at
one at the end of the second period, both
teams having scored in the first frame.
Parkhill scored twice at the start of
period three, while Goderich managed one.
Then, with Parkhill up 3-2, Goderich cut
loose for four unanswered goals and were
leading 6-3, with less than two minutes
remaining in the game.
Parkhill made it a cliffhanger, with goals
at 1:13 and 0:37, but the locals held on for the
win.
Bryan Hodges scored twice and assisted
on two goals; Jasan Meriam netted two;
David t_,umley spored one goal and two
assists; Jeff Klages had a goal and Jeremy
Powell and Jason Volland each earned an
assist.
In Sunday's loss to St. Mary's, Mike
McBride scored twice and Jason Meriam
and Jeff Klages each netted one. Bryan
Hodges assisted on the first Goderich goal.
