Young people entertain at Arthur

Lee McCallum opened the October
meeting by reading Psalm 95, followed by a
prayer.,
Mary° Beare and Mrs. Colleen Eedy of
Dungannon were welcomed to the meeting.
Hymn 'Come Ye Thankful People Come'
was sung.
It is always a pleasure having young peo-
ple entertain at the Arthur Circle meetings,
and this month was no exception, as Andrew
Carruthers favoured the group with two
beautiful solos, Green Pastures and At the
River, accompanied on the piano by Lorne
Dotterer.
Suzanne German read a touching poem
'One Day is not Enough:
`We Plough the Fields and Scatter' was
sung, and Lee thanked Andrew and Lorne
for contributing to the meeting and
presented them with a little remembrance
gift.
Glenda Salters read the roll call, followed
by the secretary's report. Reports were
heard from the treasurer Hazel McCreath,
correspondent secretary, Dorothy Blake
and Vi Fuller gave her report on flowers
sent to those who had been ill.
A short discussion on the Rummage Sale,;
coming up on October 26th. Marj Young is in
charge.
Offering was received by Marlene Starkey
aild Sandy Davidson and the offering prayer
was read in unison.
The Litany of Thanksgiving was read in
unison, followed by the Lord's Prayer.
Hazel McCreath, Glenda Salters and Lee
McCallum gave a summary of the 100th an-
niversary of the Stratford Presbyterial held
in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Strat-
ford. They all expressed how much they had
enjoyed Linda Brown from London, who
was the guest speaker. 39 candles were lit by -
presidents and delegates before taking com-
munion. Symbolic to this, 3 candles, were lit
at the Arthur Circle, Hazel McCreath, lit the
first candle for the 25 WMS afternoon Aux-
iliary groups, Glenda Salters , lit the second
candle for the 14 Arthur Circle evening
groups in the Stratford -Huron Presbytery
and Lee McCallum lit the 3rd candle for
representing the Arthur Circle itself.
Lucille Henderson introduced the guest
speaker, Mary Here, Id told the groin
some of her accomplishments.
Mary gave a talk on her trip that took her
to Papua, New Guinea, telling the group,
her daughter, who is an accountant, and her
son-in-law, who teaches there, were her
main reasons for visiting this country.
Mary showed some beautiful slides and
told us of the country and its cultures, the
schools, saying that the main language
taught is English, it is not compulsoryfor
children to go to school, but there is a er
percentage enrolled now. She also told a ut
the crops and foods of the land.
Sandy Davidson thanked Mary for a most
interesting and informative report on
Papua, New Guinea, and said after seeing
the slides and listening to Mary, it made the
group realize what a beautiful country New
Guinea is.
Lucille Henderson thanked Mary and
presented her with a gift in thanks for a very
entertaining evening.
Joyce Garrick is in charge of the next
meeting and asked everyone to bring an ar-
ticle for an auction that will be held at that
time.
WMS meeting has Thanksgiving theme
Knox Women's Missionary Society held
their October Thankoffering meeting in the
church parlor, with Mrs. R. McCallum as
pianist.
The president, Mrs. R. McAllister opened
the meeting with the hymn "For the Beauty
of the Earth", followed with prayer.
Mrs. G°" Kennedy led in the devotions,
referring to different passages in the
Psalms using the word "praise". Mrs. G.
Henderson spoke on the "Pilgrim Fathers",
who in spite of their many hardships, gave
thanks tb God for their harvest of food, in-
augurating the first Thanksgiving Day.
Ladies who attended the 100th anniver-
sary of the Stratford Presbyterial held in St.
Andrew's Church Stratford, reported an in-
teresting meeting. Mrs. 0. Falkiner (cor-
responding secretary) stated Miss Eva
Summerville of London, had made a dona-
tion to the Ewart College in memory of the
late Lily McArthur. Also, a thank you had
been sent to Mrs. Elliott for the many ar-
ticles she had donated to the talent table.
Miss Mildred Scott re-newed subscriptions
to the "Glad Tidings". •
Mrs. C. Edward and Miss Ida White gave
interesting reports on Jubilation 1984, held
in London, including a bible study of the
' Women of the Bible and an address by
Miss Pauline Brown, of India, using as her
theme "Let the Beauty of Jesus be seen in
us". Mrs. White received the offering.
The meeting closed with the hymn, "Now
Thank We all our God", and prayer. All en-
joyed a social half hour, with the lunch com-
mittee serving lunch.
Brookside students release balloons

Sherry Hodges
Dave Dawson manager of the Lucknow
District Co-op, brought a helium tank and
two helpers to blow up a balloon for each
child in the school, October 15. Each balloon
had the child's name and address on it so if
they are found the finder may contact
Brookside. The student whose balloon goes -
the furthest gets a prize.The balloons were
all released together at noon. What a
beautiful sight as they floated off into the
sky!
Mrs. Dawson came back on Tuesday to
blow up balloons for the second
Kindergarten class.
Regional cross country was held on Oc-
tober 16 at Brookside with Victoria, Robert-
son, Colborne and Holmesville schools par-
ticipating. Brookside received two
medallions - one won by Julie Pentland and
one by Warren Andrew. Brookside also
received two pennants - one for midget boys
and one for intermediate girls.
Bees caused a problem as a swarm was
stirred up and stung several children.
Members of the St,... Ambulance Cor-
ps. were on hand. Injuries included a frac-
tured arm, possible fractured ankle and a
hand cut requiring stitches.
Mrs. Blanchette's Grade One class visited
Bell's Fruit Farm and Zehrs in Goderich
last week. They brought back various fruits

and vegetables to sort and classify. They
made applesauce and stone soup from these
products. Mrs. Young's Grade Two class
also went to Bell's Fruit Farm and they also
enjoyed making soup and applesauce.
On Wednesday Warren Robinson was a
guest story reader in Mr. Worsell's Grade
Three class. They started an individualized
reading program using the series of
Monster books.
Kindergarten got a head -start on
Hallowe'en and made pumpkin faces.
Mr. Sygrove had Mr. Warren Robinso i)at-
tend his classroom where he told a story and
taught them a new song.
Mrs. Graham's Grade 8 health class is
taking an Artificial Respiration course from
the St. John Ambulance and they can be
certified if they wish.
On Wednesday because of the wet
weather, the students' council had a record
hop which was held during noon hour.
Dungannon CG IT enjoys
mother and friend night
On Wednesday the Dungannon C.G.I.T.
met to set up for the Mother and friend night
on October 18. On Thursday they met with 12
girls and 24 guests.
Ellen Errington welcomed everyone and
played a game. Melissa Logtenberg played
the piano and Cindy Robson talked about the
group, what they did in the past year and the
things coming up.
The group sang songs, performed a skit on
Let's Jump and played more games. Angela
and Arletta Glenn, Shannon Kerr, Jacqui
Dawson and Sherry Hodges played a
Lena Stowe dies
Mrs. Lena Stowe, of Goderich died
Thursday, October 18, at Victoria Hospital,
London, at the age of 97.
Born Lena Fritzley, on January 18, 1887,
m Ashfield Township, Mrs. Stowe was a life
member of the Knox Church Women's Mis-
sionary Society and a recipient of the
Rebekah Lodge 50 -year pin.
She was predeceased by her husband,
Kenneth Stowe; one son, Captain Charles
Stowe and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs.
number on their recorders. The meeting
closed with a song. Each girl then served
tea, coffee and cookies to their mother and
guest.
Saturday, October 20, nine C.G.I.T. girls,
Ellen Errington and Penny Hodges went to
Wingham for the C.G.I.T. rally.
Following worship they sang songs,
played games, made slides and name tags
for Algonquin Park and enjoyed a film.
It was a good day for fellowship and
meeting new people as about 75 girls from
the area attended.

Clarence (Aileen Caldwell, of Dearborn
Heights, Michigan. She is also survived by
her daughter-in-law, Nonie Stowe,
Goderich; four grandchildren and seven
great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Sunday October
21, at 2:30 p.m., at McCallum Funeral
Home, with Rev. G. L. Royal, of Knox
Presbyterian Church officiating and inter-
ment took place at Maitland Cemetery.
Rebekah Lodge 89, held a memorial ser-
vice at the funeral home, on Saturday even-
ing.
