Harnilton botanist
discusses hanging plants
Goderich Garden Club met in Robertson
School Music -room on October 24, at 8 P.M.
There was an attendance of 50 members and
visitors for this meeting. The President Nor-
ma Hazlitt was in the chair. Secretary and
treasurer's I sports were adopted as read.
Correspondence included several letters
about corning events these were filed for
future reference.
Mr. George Pagowski, from the outreach
program of Hamilton Botanical Gardens,
was the guest speaker for the evening and
his topic was "Hanging a Garden'. He
recommends not using any container
smaller than 10 inches for a hanging pot, as
they dry out too quickly. In his presentation,
he had several flower pots and containers
with him that are very useful for planting.
The first step before planting is to soak
sphagnum moss for at least 20 minutes and
then line the container, also wind some moss
around the top. Green moss can also be dug
up in the . woods and be used in the same
manner. Drainage is very important and
gravel or stones should always be used in
the bottom of containers. It doesn't hurt pots
to dry out once in awhile. He recommends
20.20.20 fertilizer to start pots off and then
use 15.30.15, but be careful not to over fer-
tili7e..
Many books are available for information
on hanging pots and he suggested watching
for them to come on sale. At the conclusion
