Classical piano concert
to be held at Blyth Oct 21
It's not often that an audience has an op-
portunity to see music, particularly
classical music, composed before their
eyes. Improvisation is usually thought to be
the province of jazz musicians.
Classical pianist Douglas Finch may
change that conception. Finch, who will be
appearing in concert at Blyth Memorial
Hall on Sunday, October`21 at 2 p.m., is a
composer as well as an accomplished
pianist, and his composition skillsre evi-
dent in the improvisations he includes in his
programs. Audience members are asked to
suggest a theme, and without further ado,
Mr. Finch creates a varied classical study
from it—a skill many more celebrated
pianists might envy.
Finch's amazing improvisatory skills are
backed by the technique and interpretation
of an experienced concert pianist. At the age
of 27 he has already collected an impressive
array of awards from piano competitions
across Canada and Europe, has performed
in recital and with orchestras both in
Canada and in Europe, and is often featured

on radio broadcasts, notably and frequently
on CBC's Arts National. The Toronto Star
called him "an unusually gifted pianist"
and JohniKiaglund of the Globe and Mail
commented "....a talent which should soon
start attracting wider attention." His recent
compositions have also been the subject of
CBC's "Two New Hours". '
Finch will also be performing in the tri-
centenary Bach, Handel and Scarlatti
festival for CBC's Arts National this
November, and his appearance in the
Toronto Bach Festival next March will in-
clude improvisations on themes of Bach.
Finch's program for the Blyth concert will
be as follows: Prelude and Fugue in B flat
minor (Bk. II) by J.S. Bach, Davids-
bundlertanze op. B by R. Schumann,
Ballade no. 4 in F minor by F. Chopin and an
improvisation on a theme suggested by the
audience.
Tickets for the concert are available by
calling 523-9300. The Blyth Festival's
classical music series, consisting of the
Finch concert, La Boheme by the Canadian
Opera Company Ensemble and a recital of
soprano, piano and flute featuring local
soprano Renee Stalenhoef van Haarlem, is
still available for a considerable saving over
single ticket prices. Information on the
series is also available by calling the
Festival at 523-9300.

The audience dressed for the occasion during the Fourth Annual Blyth Medieval Feast last
Saturday night. The Feast was held by the Blyth Festival as a fund raiser for the building
fund. Approximately 25-30 members volunteered to put on skits and help with the organiza-
tion of the evening. The king and queen of the evening were Katherine and Stephen Kaszas.

Theatre wants your story
BLYTH - Ever had one of those days at
work? The boss mistodk you for the cleaning
staff, your coffee cup leaked all over those
new clothes you just bought last weekend
(on credit), your supervisor introduced you
to a computer salesman who started asking
you detailed questions about your job and on
the way home, you had two flat tires.
And your next-door neighbor had the
nerve to say how nice it would be to have a
cushy job like yours instead of having to
work for a living.
All of us have the hardest job in the world
and nobody understands just how hard we
work for so little. The Theatre Circle, in one
of its two plays next spring, wants to tell
your story. Writers from the company will
be writing a new musical comedy this
winter that will tell the story of working peo-
ple and their problems.
As part of the process, Theatre Circle is
holding a contest to find the best (or worst)
story about earning a living. In 100 words or
less, tell the story of your job or of a par-
ticularly bad day you've had on the job.
Send it to Theatre Circle and if yours is the
best story, you'll win two season's tickets
for Theatre Circle productions next spring.
All entries should be sent to: The Theatre
Circle, Box 429, Blyth, Ont. NOM 1H0.
