Mustangs lose opener
CLINTON - The Clinton Junior "C"
Mustangs opened regular season hockey ac-
tion on a losing note on October 7. Hanover
defeated the host team, 7-5.
Manager Wayne Wiggins felt that the
team was "nervous" during the first period
cf the season opener. However, they fought
back during the final periods of the game.
The score was 4-0 in favor of Hanover at
the end of the first period. By the end of the
second period, the Mustangs had closed the
gap to 5-3 with goals by Darryl Madge, Brad
Armstronc and Wayne Smith.
The third period saw the puck go in both
nets, with Hanover staying ahead by at least
one goal the entire time.
Randy Marriage put the puck behind the
Hanover goaltender to make the score 5-4,
but Hanover's offence came back with a
goal of their own, maintaining their two goal
lead.
John Thompson once again narrowed
Hanover's lead to one, but Hanover scored
another goal before the end of game, winn-
ing 7-5.
Atoms score victories
over Lucan, Exeter
The Goderich Atoms opened their minor
hockey season with a 5-1 victory over Lucan,
in a game played October 13, in Lucan.
Goderich took command of the game right
away, when Jared Whalen scored 55 seconds
into the first period. Jason Cook drew an
assist on the goal. The first period ended
with Goderich leading 2-0. Jason Jeffrey
scored the other goal, at 9:45, assisted by
Don Rivers and Jamie Stanley. -
Neither team hit the twine in the second
frame, but Jason Jeffrey turned on the red
light only 15 seconds into period three. Don
Rivers assisted on the play.
Chad Papple and Jeff Beange netted the
other Goderich goals in the third, with
assists going to Jared Whalen, Sam Hosack
and Todd Papple.
Chuck Macleman and Jason Duckworth,
in the Goderich net, kept Lucan off the
scoreboard until 12:49 of the third period.
Chad. Gwatchmi scored the lone Lucan
marker, assisted by Brad Coughlin and
Brian Heckman.
The following day in Exeter, Goderich
continued their winning ways, squeaking out
a 3-2 victory, in Shamrock league play.
The game went back and forth, with
Exeter taking an early lead on a goal at 0:37
of the first period. Goderich came right back
to tie the score on Jason Jeffrey's goal at the
2:44 mark, assisted by Sean Carver.
Exeter went up 2-1 in the second and
remained ahead until Todd Papple scored to
tie the game, at 12:16 of the third, assisted
by Sam Hosack and Chad Papple.
Jeff Beange potted the winning marker at
13: 48, assisted by Jason Hayter.
Mustangs win two Jr. C dames
CLINTON - After losing their first hockey
game of the season, the Clinton Jr. "C"
Mustangs won their following two games.
On October 12, they defeated Kincardine 12-
5 and on October 14 they downed Port Elgin
3-1.
Manager Wayne Wiggins feels that the
Mustangs out skated and out played the
Kincardine team on the large Kincardine ice
surface.
Leading the scoring in the game' was
Kevin Lee, scoring four goals. Brad
Armstrong also had a good night, putting the
puck behind the Kincardine goaltender
twice.
Kincardine jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead
with only five minutes gone in the game.
However, goals by Lee and Armstrong
quickly tied the game. Assisting on Lee's
powerplay goal was Pete Willerns while
Shawn Rahbek and Doug Zimmer assisted
on the second goal.
Nineteen seconds later, Brad Hymers put
the Mustangs up by one after taking a pass
from Wayne Smith.
Before the period was done, the Mustangs
managed to net three more powerplay.

the score 6-2 at the end of one. Picking up
assists were Wayne Smith with two, Tom
Smith, Jamie Mahler and Zimmer with one
each.
Kincardine started off the second period
strong, scoring one goal before Clinton could
get their momentum going. The Mustangs
answered with four goals within seven
minutes, takirltg the lead 10-3. Each of the
four goals were scored while the Mustangs
were playing short handed.
Adding points to their goals column were
Lee with two, Grant Garrow and Tom
Smith, both scoring unassisted.
Assisting on Lee's goals were Garrow and
Tom Smith.
Kincardine capitalized on two Clinton
penalties towards the end of the second
period, scoring two powerplay goals. The
teams left the ice with the Mustangs
leading, 10-5.
The third period was not as profitable for
the Mustangs as they only managed two
goals towards the latter stages of the game.
Scoring to give the Mustangs an on the road
victory of 12-5 were Ron McKay and
Zimmer. Zimmer picked up the assist on
McKay's goal and scored his unassisted.
Clinton -3 - Port Elgin 1
The score ,could have been very lopsided
for the Mustangs had Port Elgin not had
spectacular goaltending. As it turned out,
the Mustangs still out scored their visitors,
3-1.
Port Elgin scored the lone first period goal
after the Mustangs controlled the majority
of play. The Mustangs kept fighting back,
thundering the puck off Port Elgin's goal
post with only seconds remaining in the
period.
Dave Wright tied the game on a
powerplay goal with a slapshot from the
blue line. Assisting on the play was Brad
Armstrong. Four minutes later Armstrong
scored one of his own to put the Mustangs up
by one.
Earning the assists were Dean Armstrong
and Pete Willems.
The third period saw an unassisted
assurance goal by Rob Dupee, giving the
Mustangs their second win of the season.
The Mustangs next game is October 21 in
Wingham. On October 26 they will play host
to Hanover with game time set for 8:30 p.m.
They will also host Kincardine on October 28
starting at 7 p.m.
Midgets play to 3-3 tie with Lucan
The Goderich Legion Midgets opened
their 1984-85 Shamrock League hockey
season on October 13, when the team travell-
ed to Lucan, to play the first of 19 scheduled
games.
The midgets came home with a 3-3 tie,
after starting off the scoring at the six
minute mark of the first period. The goal
came off the stick of David Duncan, with
.assists from Ron Chapman and Darrin Con-
nelly.
Lucan came right back and scored at the
eight minute mark, with Stephen McIntyre
getting the goal and Mike Arts and Todd
Hayter getting assists.
After a scoreless second period, Goderich
got ahead on a goal by Jim Beattie,
unassisted. Lucan came right back again,
with Mike Arts scoring, assisted by Tod
Hayter and Stephen McIntyre.
Darren Connelly scored the go-ahead goal
for Goderich, assisted by David Duncan.
Goderich led until there were only 41
seconds left in the game, when Mike Arts
scored again, assisted by McIntyre to end
the game in a tie.
The Midgets next game is October 17, in
Exeter. On October 20, St. Mary's at
Goderich and Goderich at Parkhill, October
21.
