Volunteer
Day set
for Oct. 20
Volunteers are an integral and vital part -
of a community's development.
And in recognition of the volunteer and
to amplify the need for more volunteers,
the recreation department will sponsor a
three-part series for volunteers involved in
community non-profit organizations.
The first part is Volunteer Day and it
happens in the arena lobby this Saturday
from 1 to 3 p.m. Twenty volunteer groups
and organizations working with children
have been invited to set up a display in the
arena lobby to provide information about
their group to parents and interested
citizens.
Many groups working with children
have a demonstrated need for more
volunteers and an invitation is extended to
everyone to attend. While Volunteer Day
was organized to bring to light the need for
more help, it will also act as a usefull infor-
mation exchange between groups and
parents.
The second part of the series will feature
a workshop on volunteers by Karen Ross of
the Central Volunteer Bureau of London.
The seminar will be held in the grandstand
meeting room Saturday, November 3 at 9
a.m.

CAL NEWS'
The Huron County Board of Education
has to find a slot to place teachers of
developmentally handicapped students.
Paul Carroll, superintendent of special
education, told the Oct. 1 meeting of the
trustees that this type of teacher is new for
the board.
Currently, the teachers of developmen-
tally handicapped students are recognized
as teachers by the provincial ministry of
community and social services. These
teachers are graduates of a community
college, said Mr. Carroll and are classified
as non -certified.
As part of its special education package,
the Huron board will be hiring three of
these teachers for September 1985, one.
each for Huron Hope in Huron Park, Queen
Elizabeth in Goderich and Golden Circle in
Wingham.
The board's personnel committee has to
decide whether to put these non -certified
teachers as union or non-union personnel.
This step takes the board closer to fuller
implementation of special education.
The ministry of education has set
September 1985 as the target date for full
implementation of what started out as Bill

The Goderich Branch of Toastmasters International hosted a Humouros and Impromptu
Speaking Cohtest for Area 10 at the Bedford Hotel on Saturday evening. Local contestants
were Dennis Little (left) who competed in the humorous category and Bill Metcalfe who
competed in the impromptu category and won second place. A total of 60-70 people par-
ticipated in the contest from three clubs in London, one in Stratford •and one in St. Thomas as
well as the Goderich Club. Winner in the humorous category was Larry Sider of Stratford
and in the impromptu category, Pauline Duncan of London won. The Goderich Club had the
honor of hosting the contest because one of its members, Mark Sully, won the area competi-
tion last year in the humorous category. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)
County approves
$137,824billfor
new computer system
Huron County Council approved going
ahead with a $137,824 computer system for
three of its departments.
Only Exeter Peeve Bill Mickle and Depu-
ty Reeve Lossy Fuller were opposed to mak-
ing the purchase which was approved at the
October session.
Osama Sherif of London, an engineer
from Woods, Gordon, the consulting firm
which recommends buying the computer
system from MAI Canada Limited was on
hand to answer council's questions. And
there were many.
Deputy Reeve Fuller said she had contac-
taed a local computer salesperson and they
had never heard of MAI. Both Mr. Sherif
and clerk -treasurer -administrator Bill Han-
ly said the firm has been in business for
many years. MAI has put similar systems in
other municipalities in Ontario and is cur-
rently installing such a computer system for
Lambton County.
Mra Sherif said there were two computer
vendors - MAI and Molnar Systems Group
that had their proposals compared. Initially
six firms were approached, including IBM,
but only the two systems mentioned plus
R.J. Thompson Data Systems responded.
MAI is the selected system for several
reasons, said Mr. Sherif. The reasons in-
clude the fact that MAI can be expanded,
the work of adapting the software to fit the
county is included in the cost of the system,
there is a shorter installation time - 11 mon-
ths and an overall lower price by about
$15,000.
There was disappointment from county
councillors when Mr. Hanly said there were
no funds left in a provincial grant program
for computers.
"Funds under this project are dried up.
Maybe we can hope for an election to bring
on more funds," said Mr. Hanly.
Huron County will end up with a computer
in both Goderich and Clinton. The one in
Goderich will service both the finance -
administration and highways departments
and the one in Clinton will be at Huronview
for that institution. The system also includes
seven video display terminals and four
printers.
The overall cost includes obtaining a soft-
ware license at $44,000. Other costs for such
things as computer room renovation and air
conditioning are also included.
Over and above the $137,000 figure there
will be an annual maintenance and com-
munication line fee of approximately $9,000.
The county budgeted for $150,000 for the
computer system.
Activity is key word for teachers
Bring your running shoes to the Oct. 26
professional activity day for the Huron -
Perth Separate School teachers.
For on that day, physical education and
mathematics will top the presentations.
The separate school's professional
activity committee have gathered
professionals in the two subjects to make
presentations. 3
Auke Van Hoist of the Faculty of
Education at the University of Western
Ontario, well-known for his physical
education theories will be on hand for the
day. Also from UWO is Norm West.
Folk dancing will be presented by Stu
McLean of the Elgin Board of Education.
Mathematics, enrichment and seven
practical skills with the pumpkin, will be
discussed by math consultants. One is Wally
Webster of the Huron Board of Education
and the other is Linden Gray of the Addison
Wesley Co.
Parents are welcome to the 9 a.m. to 3:45
P.A. day which will be held at St. Michael's
Separate School in Stratford. •
