Cadet inspection held at School
Members of Goderich-based 532 Maitland
Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets, got a
chance to display the skill they have aquired
through participation in the air cadets
program, when a cadet inspection was held
at Robertson School, Goderich, on October
2.
The air cadets in this area have about 45
members, drawn from Goderich and the
surrounding area, including: Clinton,
Ripley, Vanastra and Brucefield. The local
chapter is sponsored by the Goderich
Rotary Club, who's main role is to aid in
fund-raising activities.
Members, include both males and
females, and range in age from 13 to 19
years, inclusive. The cadets' activities are
supervised by adults. Their commanding
officer is Captain Rick Livesey, who is aided
by Captain Pat King and Second Lieutenant
Syd Hall.
Livesy says there are a ' number of
advantages for youths who get involved with
air cadets, including the opportunity to
learn basic military skills and basic
survival techniques. Cadets are also given
the opportunity to attend summer camps,
and to learn about aircrafts, both the
powered flight and the glider variety.
Cadets also have an advantage when it
comes to obtaining a pilot's license.
Another bonus offered air cadets. is the
opportunity to see Europe, through
exchange programs with cadet corps in
other countries. Although no one from the
local group has ever qualified for one of he
exchanges, one local cadet, First Class
Warrant officer. Grant Townsend, did make
it to the interview stage last year.
Livesey said Townsend is one of the top
local cadets, having been with the group
since its inception in 1978.
Each summer one of the 532 Squadron
members is given the opportunity to go on a
"familiarization flight" on a Royal
Canadian Air Force C-130 Hercules
transport air craft. This year Sargent
George Whittaker, of Brucefield, will be
making the trip, from the air force base at
Trenton, to Goose Bay, on October 15.
Whittaker also participated in a Senior

leadership camp at Cold Lake Alberta,
earlier in the year.
All air cadet activities are available at no
charge to the cadets, even uniforms are
supplied. This is possible largely throught
he efforts of the Rotary Club and the
National Air Cadet League.
Not only are cadet activities free, but
cadets receive an honorarium of $40 per
week for each camp they attend beyond the
basic first camp.
Some cadets are even lucky enough to
obtain summer employment with the armed
forces, through the cadet corps, said
Levesey: This past summer, two of the top
local cadets were worked for the aimed
forces, assisting in the running of cadet
camps, one in .Cornwallis and one -in
Trenton.
The bulk of cadet activity, except for
summer camps, takes place through the
regular school year. The squadron meets
Tuesday nights, at Robertson school,
learning such things as leadership, aviation,
navigation, meteorology and basic cadet
training.
