Annual reunion and dinner
held for World War I vets
BY NEIL SHAW
The annual reunion and dinner of the
World War I veterans of Huron County was
held at Goderich Legion Branch 109 on
Saturday, October 6.
First War veterans and their Legion
escorts were present from Brussels, Blyth,
Wingham, Seaforth, Kincardine, Clinton
and Goderich.
Prior to the dinner, the group was
entertained by several members . of the
Goderich Harbouraires and by Bert
Kempster on the electric organ.
Head table guests at the dinner included
the District Commander Lloyd Anderson,
Zone, Commander Glenn Bridge, Mayor
Eileen Palmer, Assistant Padre, the
Reverend John Wood, Branch President
John A. MacDonald, 'First Vice -President
Alvin Blackwell and Branch Padre, the
Reverend G.L. Royal who was the guest
speaker.
Greetings were brought to the meeting
from their respective municipalities by
Goderich Mayor Palmer, Reeve Harry
Worsell, Huron County Warden Tom
Cunningham and Colbostr Township Reeve
Russel Kernighan.
Following the dinner, a wreath was placed
at the front of the Legion Hall below the
memorial window in memory of all the First
War veterans who died during that war and
those who had passed to their reward since
the last reunion and dinner. The wreath was
placed by First War veteran and Branch 109
Past President Clarence MacDonald,
assisted by Branch President John A.
MacDonald.
In his remarks as guest speaker, Branch
Padre Royal recalled a few of his boyhood
memories of the First World War and
reminded everyone of the true meaning of
service. The speaker explained that a
serviceman takes an oath of allegiance to
the Ding or Queen and then the will is
involved and the objective can be attained.
Servicemen since Roman times have been
and are still servants - not slaves - of the
people.
The dinner program was conducted by
Past yresident Roy Mugford and the
catering was done by members of the Ladies
Auxiliary of Branch 109.
The World War I reunion and dinner next
year will be held at Branch 183 in
Kincardine.
