Ryan Parrish, 8, is the lucky recipient of a giant pumpkin for Halloween from his neighbour
Harold Carter. Mr. Carter grew three giant pumpkins this year, the largest one measuring
six feet, two inches around and weighing 135% pounds. He used giant pumpkin seeds sent to
him by his daughter and "just watered them a bit, nothingsspecial". He says he has never
grown anything so large before, explaining that the pumpkins "took over" the rest of his
backyard garden. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)

Lock your
vehicle to
prevent theft
News and Views this week deals with the
theft of motor vehicles (the' figures also
include attempt thefts.) Statistics are as
follows: 1974 -13,1975 - 20, 1976 -15,1977 - 21,
1978 -11, 1979 - 29, 1980 - 26,1981- 22,1982.15,
1983 - 11, 1984 (to 30 Sept.) - 4, for a total of
187 -and an average of 17. Clearance rate
(cases solved by charges or otherwise) is
56.15 percent.
With the exception of six vehicles, all have
been recovered. One of those vehicles
located was found burned outside of
Goderich. In about 80 percent of the cases,
the vehicles were unlocked and over 60
percent had keys in the vehicles.
A good way to prevent your vehicle from
being stolen is to LOCK IT when NOT in use,
even in your own driveway. An unlocked
vehicle with keys in the ignition tempts
those inclined to take it for a while (or per-
manently).
If you leave a set of keys under the
vehicle, you normally hide them so you can
easily get to them. The thief also knows the
common hiding places, so take care. Protect
your vehicle. LOCK IT AND POCKET =the
Key.
Are you spending too much
money on alcohol in a week?
Drinking is often related to socializing.
Many of us like to have a few drinks when
we are out with friends. Indeed there are
tunes when it would be appropriate to
drink: when quenching one's thirst, when
relaxing, with dinner and with friends. The
important point, however, is knowing hcw to
keep drinking at a moderate level.
There may be occasions, such as parties,
when we drink too much and feel it the next
day. For example, Saturday, the day we'd
like to get so many things done is often
wasted if Friday night we over -indulged. We
feel tired, lazy and may even have a
hangover.
If we drink more than enough each day or
most days of the week, we would find our
performance at work not quite up to par;
our thinking a bit fuzzy and slow. Over a
period of time, most easy functions would
become real chores and we would lose
interest -even have periodic short lapses of
memory. Such symptoms could easily hap-
pen to those who drink 25 - 30 drinks per
week regularly, not to mention the physical
long-term side effects for those who drink at
this level over a number of years.
But why should we, feel that we'rer4r'ink
ing too Mitch if'nany of'our friends drink the
same amount? It may seem quite normal.
But is it? Just because those with whom we
socialize drink the same way, it does not
mean that we are drinking at the same level
as the population in general. It has been
shown that on average most people in On -

We may drink like those in our group, we
may be drinking at levels that are not good
for our health and higher than most people.
We should think about it for a moment and
consider how much we really drink in a
week. Even if we do most of our drinking on
weekends, what about the other days of the
week? This also contributes to the weekly
total. Without realizing it, this has addedlup
to quite a bit.
There is also the aspect of cost. Someone
who drinks as much as 30 drinks a week,
could have saved in four year's time almost
enough money to buy a new car! Cut that in
half and think of the things that could be
done with the money. Every dollar we save
from reducing drinking could reward us
with those things we thought we could not af-
ford.
How many of us drink out of habit, without
really thinking about it? Did we really need
that drink at lunch? Do we really need that
drink after work to unwind and those after
supper while watching T.V?
Alcohol, like any drug, if taken too often
and in large amounts over a period of time,
can become addictive. We can become
psychologically.and even physically depen-
dent on ' dental 'Our bodies may become
dependent on it to the point where we feel we
cannot function without it — we cannot enjoy
ourselves, we cannot be sociable, we cannot
get through a day. It might impart a sense of
security or an illusion of self-worth. Once
these immediate effects wear off, however,

our daily problems are still with us. We can-
not hide from the world around us.
If this dependence continues our work will
suffer; our relationships and health will
deteriorate. Most of all, we will lose out.
Those around us will become accustomed to
getting along without us and we will have lit-
tle self-respect to fall back on.
These days it's OK to be concerned about
diet, exercise and smoking; it's also OK to
be ' concerned about our personal use of
alcohol. If you are concerned and want to
reduce your drinking, consider the Alcohol
Educational and Counselling Program be-
ing offered in Goderich.
This program includes individual ses-
sions, once a week, for seven weeks, with a
trained professional. Each session involves
one client and one counsellor and all the in-
formation is confidential. During the ses-
sions, you will learn to understand alcohol
and the effects it is having on your life. You
will become aware of the benefits of chang-
ing your drinking habits, You will develop '
alternatives to drinking, with the help of
your counsellor.
If you'd like more ins b'lmation or would
like to make an appo.in . - call 52441264.
By the way, if your, e. curious about the
amount of money you are spending on
alcohol, try the following: keep track of how
many drinks you have each day, for the next
seven days; also write down how much you
spend each day on drinks. You might be sur-
prised!
