October 1-7 is Lungs are
for Life Week in Ontario
During Lungs Are For Life Week Oct. 1- 7,
Lung Associations throughout Ontario will
be involved in many activities which . will
focus on the theme Adult Lung Health
Awareness.
This awareness campaign may take many
forms - from displays in malls and
libraries, to special events such as lung
runs, walk-a-thons, or perhaps a turkey trot.
Whatever the method, volunteers and staff
are dedicating this week to inform as many
people as possible, about the importance of
good lung health and how the Lung
Association can help you.
• COPD - WHAT IS 1T?
`
There are more than half -a -million Cana-
dians suffering from emphysema and
chronic bronchitis (Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease).
EMPHYSEMA is a lung disease in which
some of the air sacs deep in the lungs have
been damaged. Emphysema commonly
strikes males between the age of 50 and 70.
But recent statistics show an increasing
number of women with emphysema. Smok-
ing from an early age is the major cause of
emphysema, and so women are showing up
more and more in the statistics. Research
has also revealed that some people born
'with a substance called alpha-1 antitrypsin
are more likely to develop emphysema at an
early age.
BRONCHITIS is an inflammation of the
lining of the bronchial tubes. These tubes,
the bronchi, connect the windpipe with the
lungs. When the bronchi are inflamed, and
infected,, the air -flow to and from the lungs
becomes labored and a heavy mucus or
phlegm is coughed up. Chronic bronchitis is
the term applied when coughing and spitting
continues for months. People most likely to
get chronic bronchitis are smokers, and the
continuing cough after a severe cold is
usually dismissed as "smokers cough".
Soon the coughing and spitting is accepted
as a regular occurrence. Frequently by the
time a patient goes to a doctor, the lungs
have been seriously injured.
Rehabilitation programs such as the Bet-
ter Breathing Clubs, sometimes known as
S.O.B. (shortness of breath, or other in-
genious names) bring people together to
learn about the disease and how to cope with
it in their daily lives. These groups are noted
for their "gutsy" upbeat approach to their
disability.
If you have trouble breathing because of a
chronic lung disease,, call your local Lung
Association for the brochures — Em-
physema - The Facts, Chronic Bronchitis -
The Facts, or the booklet Help Yourself To
Better Breathing. Take Control - Lungs Are
For Life.
The Huron -Perth Lung Association is
located at 653 Gore St. W., Stratford. For in-
formation phone 271-7500.
Searis absent for medical reason
A story in the September 26th edition of
the Signal -Star outlined town council's
decision to advertise for a tourism -
industrial co-ordinator. Administrator
Larry McCabe was instructed to place an
ad for the position after the wording was
approved by the town solicitor.
The story suggested that Reeve Harry
