OR PEANUT BUTTER CHIP OR PLAIN OATMEAL Rummaging t111rouggh some old papers, I happened on a smallhitem about the Col- borne pyTownship Hall. I like to call it "Carlow Hall". I'm sure you all know where it is - I can give you directions...? Well, you cross the bridge, go out a few miles to a big barn on the right - the turn to Carlow. You can reach Dungannon, Auburn, Dunlop, and Benmiller from this road. But when you get to Carlow Hall - on, the crossroad - you turn left to reach the Nile. Whoa! I wanted to say something about that nice old building at Carlow - The Township of Colborne Hall. It was built in 1 19 by James McDonagh - after they removed a log house that had been used as an hotel. This building was certainly huge in comparison to the "hotel". The contractor was Jamieson Reid. Many of you haven't even heard of Gavin Green or his brother David who, as youngsters, worked on the building as brick carriers or brick layers. Gavin reached the ripe old age of 100: and I'm not sure if it was more. He wrote lots of stories about this area - even had books published. They are hard to find now. I knew Mr. Green and have a book which I bought in about 1947 at his little old "Curiosity Shoppe" for 25 cents. The book was older than Gavin, as the first entry was 1869 but he signed the front of the book for me in 1969. How about THAT? I'm getting away from the "hotel" since Mr. Green is another "story". One of the innkeepers was a Jonathan Miller. I believe he was the Miller who - weighed 468 pounds - and THAT'S another story! The township bought the hotel in about 1918 for mainly their council meetings. Later the Women's Institute began using it and took over 'the maintenance. They had partitions i emoved and made the Great Hall. Later they fur- nished a kitchen and took over the p •eserva- tion of this fine old building. These ladies were all homemakers who made rugs and quilts, did crochet work and knitting. They had such a great variety of crafts which they could scarcely believe, un- til they had a good big crafts show! This show became a yearly venture. They had to open their nice building by removing more walls and soon they had to find a bigger building for their show. They then went to the Saltford Valley Hall which seemed huge - now they need more room or their show will be spoiled since it is so crowded you can barely see half the ex- hibits. I would like to see them build on to that nice old building in Carlow. It could be their answer if they have enough ground space. Of course they could have several floors to spread out their Christmas Fair and I believe the building would be busy all year with many shows. Just an idea! In my column October 10, 1968, I made practically the same suggestions with "Good going, Ladies, stay with it!" Now I hope they WILL stop and think about it again. 4508 PKG I.69 Have a nice week. This year's theme is ADULT LUNG HEALTH AWARENESS. "The need for information about hazards to the lungs can be demonstrated by taking a look around the house", says Marybelle Ford, Executive Director for the Lung Association in Huron -Perth areas. "Many of us use chemical products almost on a daily basis. We may even be mixing these products hoping for better results. This practice can be dangerous," warns Miss Ford. "For instance, the mixing of bleach and ammonia produces deadly fumes. Always read product labels. An im- portant sentence may be the one with infor- mation which tells who should NOT use the product". For example, read the label carefully when buying a paint stripper. It may be that the stripper you plan to purchase will recommend that people with heart and lung conditions should not use the product because it contains a chemical that reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Other labels state that the product should only be used in a well ventilated area. "The home humidifier can also be a hazard to the lungs," states Marybelle Ford, Executive Director. "It +s a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria •f water in the humidifier is allowed to become stagnant. Empty the reservoir once every two weeks and clean it with soap and water or with a disinfectant recommended by the manufac- turer." The Lung Association throughout Ontario will be marking LUNGS ARE FOR LIFE WEEK in many special ways. There will be displays in malls and libraries, and pro- grams directed to helping people who have chronic lung disability. The Lung Association fights all lung disease year-round. Contact your Lung Association in the Huron -Perth area at 271- 7500 and ask for information on Health Hazards in the home and workplace. Take control - LUNGS ARE FOR LIFE. LET'S SEE YOU DO IT...
