Christopher Moore
Christopher Moore, the award-winning
author of Louisbourg Portraits, will be
speaking at the Goderich Public Library, on
Thursday, October 11 at 8 p.m. The topic of
Mr. Moore's talk will be "The Loyalists and
the Writing of Canadian History".
Moore was raised in British Columbia and
presently lives in Burlington, Ontario. He
received his M.A. in History from the
University of Ottawa in 1977. Since 1972 he
has been researching and 'writing about
Canadian history, through work with the
Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic
Park, Heritage Canada, the Historical Atlas
of Canada, the National Film Board, and the
CBC.
In 1982, Morre published Louisbourg Por-
traits, whick received acclaim from
scholars and critics alike and won the 1982
Governor -General's Award for non-fiction.
His most recent publication is The
Loyalist: Revolution, Exile, Settlement, a
beautifully illustrated, carefully researched
volume commemorating the Bicentennial of
the Loyalist migration. Using original
sources, letters, diaries and official records,
he explores the experiences and motivations
that turned people into Loyalists, the pro-
blems that confrontedthem upon arriving in
Canada and the patterns of Loyalist settle-
ment which have shaped our heritage.
The Huron County Public Library and the
Friends of the Library are pleased to spon-
sor this program in honour of Ontario's
Bicentennial. Everyone is welcome. Admis-
sion is free.
Free musical

be presented

"Fiddle Fantasy", a free, musical
children's program will be presented on
Saturday, October 6 by the Huron County
Public Library. Eric Nagler will perform at
the Hensall Public School at 10 a.m. and at
the Goderich Public Library at 2:30 p.m.
Nagler has been a professional musician
since 1967. He has appeared on radio, televi-
sion and at major folk festivals across North
America. For the past four years, he has
devoted his energy to children's music,
working extensively as a soloist and also ac-
companying Sharon, Lois and Bram during
their larger concerts. His first children's
album, "Fiddle irPadrune", has recently
been released on the Elephant Record label.
During "Fiddle Fantasy", Nagler leads
the children through a farrago of fiddle
facts, fantasies, stories and tunes. He and
his audience investigate the components of
the fiddle's sound, the superstitions and
special qualities which make it so important
in folk traditon. Stories of olden day
neighbourhood musical gatherings leads in-
to a recreation of Grandpa Sullivan's Parlor
with the children joining in on a variety of
homemade instruments including rattles,
spoons and combs. Nagler presents a varie-
ty of musical material drawn from tradi-
tional and contemporary sources.
This program will be especially suitable
for children from kindergarten to Grade 8.
However, everyone is welcome and don't
forget that admission is free. The perfor-
mance will be one hour in length.
"Fidclle Fantasy" is sponsored by the
Huron County Library and funded by
Outreach Ontario.
