Knox WMS celebrates 100th anniversary
Members of the. Knox Presbyterian
Women's Missionary Society (W.D.) after-
noon auxiliary, in a special celebration,
marked their 100th anniversary Tuesday,
September 18, and With the assistance of
Knox Arthur Circle, entertained WMS
members from Hensall, Auburn, Belgrave,
Atwood and various church groups in
Goderich.
The meeting opened with the president,
Mrs. R. McAllister giving the call to worship
and all joined in singing, "Praise God from
Whom all Blessings Flow".
The opening hymn, "Guide Me Oh Thou
Great Jehovah" with Lorne Dotterer at the
piano, and prayer by the Reverend G.L.
Royal, started an interesting meeting.
Mr. Royal, assisted by Mrs. G.G.
MacEwan, dedicated a small plaque to be
placed on a wall book shelf recently in-
stalled in the church parlor in memory of a
former member, Miss Ann McDonald.
Life membership secretary, Mrs. J. Hor-
ton, presented Mrs. Gordon Henderson, past
president, with an Honorary Life Member-
ship Certificate.
An excellent summary of the history of
Knox WMS Auxiliary's 100 years of service
was given by Mrs. E. Bogie.
Mrs. C. Edward and Mrs. D. Croft gave an
impressive "In Memoriam" for all who
have served, lit a tall candle and read an ap-
propriate poem. Members then joined in
singing the hymn, "Faith of our Fathers"
and Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock read the scrip-
ture from Psalm 61.
Mrs. G.L. Royal introduced the guest
speaker, Mrs. K. Rayner Of Paris, President
of Hamilton -London Synodical, who gave a
timely message, pausing to reflect on the
work of those women who laid the founda-
tion of the WMS. She said they had the vision
and the challenge to press on, to build the
society, to go forward, and now members,
after 100 years, pause to thank them for
what they started and built.
Special music was provided by a ladies'
trio consisting of Betty Wilkin, Shirley
McMillan and Laurine Madge, accom-
panied by Ila Worsell.
Courtesy remarks were given by Mrs.
Mabel Young while Mrs. G. Henderson
presented a few "thank yous".
The local chapter of the Knox Presbyterian Women's Missionary
Society afternoon group recently celebrated their 100th anniver-
sary. A luncheon was held at the church and executive members of
the group gathered for a ceremonial cake cutting. Current Presi-
dent Mrs. Robert McAllister (front right) cut the cake. In the
The president thanked all who had helped
in the special event. Mrs. Ora McCallum of-
fered grace, Mr. Royal pronounced the
benediction and all joined in the social half
hour which was a time for visiting and

meeting old friends. Many were delighted to
meet Mrs. Ann Leitch of Toronto, a former
member, and other friends while they en-
joyed lunch and the anniversary cake made
and donated by Mrs. E. Bogie and Mrs. M.
Bogie. The cake was iced in blue and gold,
the Presbyterian colors, depicted the "Bur-
ning Bush" and was attractively displayed
with two beautiful bouquets, gifts of Mrs.
G.L. Royal.
Free Methodists celebrate Bicentennial of Methodism
John and Charles Wesley would have been
pleased with the proceedings of the annual
retreat of close to 50 Western Ontario Free
methodist pastors and wives held in
Thamesford September 17-19.
The group, as part of the Free Methodist
Church's celebration this year of 200 years
of Methodism in North America, sang songs
written by Charles Wesley, the hymn writer
of the Methodist movement (he wrote more
than 6,000).
They also participated in a liturgy written
and originally used by John Wesley call the
John Wesley Covenant service.
Back home 'Tit h the retreat is the
Reverend Herbert A. McLeod, pastor of the
Free Methodist Church in Goderich.
At the retreat, the Reverend Gary R.
Walsh of Brantford, superintendent of
Western and Northwestern Ontario Free
Methodist churches, tackled the practical
concerns of boosting attendance in Sunday
evening church services and of finding
creative ways to meet the spiritual and
social needs of the churches' communities,
whether through church services, home Bi-
ble studies, or visitation.
Said Mr. Walsh, "The Bicentennial
celebrations of Methodism have quickened
the members of our movement to an ap-
preciation of our Methodist roots. In fact,
there is a renewed desire in our denomina-
tion to be the Methodist movement in
Canada today.
"As we've looked at a whole range of ec-
clesiastical experiences from liturgies to

social concerns, we've all be pleasantly sur-
prised to see that our movement is still rele-
vant for meeting spiritual and social
needs."
The superintendent added that he is happy
with the church's openness to the whole
Christian community. "We haven't had to
resort to narrow bigotry or denominational
chauvinism to motivate our people."
Also speaking at the retreat, on motiva-
tion and time management for church
leaders, was the Reverend W.D. Kinney of
Moose . Jaw, superintendent of the
denorgivation's Canada West Conference.
The Free Methodist Church is one of few
Protestant churches in Canada to post a
gain in membership over the past several
years.
It is an evangelical church that retains
historical Methodist distinctives in Biblical
theology, doctrine, and church government,
and which reflects John Wesley's emphasis
on the need to spread God's overflowing love
from the life of the believer to his neighbor.
Throughout North America this year
Methodist denominations and denomina-
tions with Methodist roots have reviewed
the major themes of Methodism, which
flowed out of an 18th -century evangelical
revival that some historians say saved
Great Britain from a violent, bloody revolu-
tion such as the French Revolution.
Two of those themes are God's freely
given grace available to all men and
women, whether a member of the establish-
ment or a coal miner in Wales, and the
capacity of everyone .to receive this salva-
tion.
Traditionally accompanying these themes
have been emphases on personal "heart
warming" experience of God through Jesus
Christ and on the necessity of moral
discipline.
The Free Methodist Church in Canada has
congregations in the prairie provinces and
Ontario and Quebec. It did not join various
Methodist unions in the 19th century that led
to the Methodist Church's merging in 1925
with Presbyterians and Congregationalist to
form the United Church of Canada.
The Methodist Church was once the
largest Protestant denomination in Canada.
