Provincial Mine Accident dissociation holds meeting
BY PATRICK RAFTIS
Safety awareness, workmen's compensa-
tion and a budget were all topics on the
agenda of the Mine Accident Prevention
Association provincial directors when the
group met in Goderich on September 21,
The MAPA's main purpose is to educate
and train people involved in the mining in-
dustry in accident pre'Vention and safety
awareness, said MAPA Executive Director
Ernie Issaac. Although the association
works closely with the provincial govern-
ment, it is not government funded, said
Issaac. MAPA funding comes from the
Workmen's Compensation Board, and in-
directly, from the mining industry. The pro-
vincial directors' meetings are held five
times a year, each time in a different min-
ing centre.
Issaac said the single greatest safety pro-
blem in mining is "falls of loose ground", or
cave-ins. Much of the MAPA's efforts are
concentrated on educating mining person-
nel in techniques to prevent such occur-
rences and how to deal with them should
they occur.
The saftey education of miners is an on-
going process, said Issaac. "As soon as you
relax your efforts, problems start cropping up."
Despite the ever present risks involved,
Issaac says there has been "a definite
downtrend" in the number of mining ac-
cidents, particularly fatalities, in the past
ten years. This downtrend, he said, can be
directly related to increased safety
awarness and conscious efforts to prevent
accidents.
Part of the directors' meeting was spent
discussing the role of the Workmen's Com-
pensation Board in mine safety and the
MAPA's reaction to that role.
"What is happening is that the WBC has
been criticized in the past for concentrating
on compensation for disabled workers and
not putting enough effort into, accident
prevention," said Issaac.
What the WCB is attempting to do now, he
said, is co-ordinate the efforts of the MAPA
and other saftey associations, like the In -

The provincial directors met in a morning
session at the Bedford Hotel. The Southern
Ontario chapter of the association also held
a morning meeting at the hotel. The Domtar

the Southern Ontario chapter, along with

More boats visited Goderich
marina this past season council told
' Goderich Marina Supervisor Bruce Allin
has reported to town council that 287 boats
carrying 785 tourists visited Goderich
during the 1984 boating season (the marina
closed for, business September 10). This
compares to 240 boats carrying 646 tourists
in the 1983 season.
Allin also reported that 1984 launching
ramp revenues were down due to less
traffic on the ramps, more season's passes
issued and a higher percentage of people
not paying their fees (29 per cent as
compared to 20 per cent in 1983).
In other marina news, council received a
thank -you letter from Mrs. J.L. Anderson
who visited the marina for four days in
mid-July for the first time.
Mrs. Anderson writes, "...they were by
far the most pleasant four days of our two-
week vacation. It is our intention to spend
much more time in your marina in future
years, for we were completely captivated
by your city, your citizens and especially
your personnel...Congratulations to all.
We look forward to seeing you next
summer."
A letter of thanks to council and the
people of Goderich was also received from
the officers and crew of the HMCS
Saguenay. It read in part as follows: "The
relaxed pace of the town and the
hospitality that was extended was greatly
appreciated.
"The town levee was judged a complete
success and the participants in k'le pistol
shoot were impressed by the
professionalism and graciousness of the
members of the Goderich Police Force. It
has been mentioned that c: the next visit
we should challenge the town firefighters
to a tug-of-war not a sofball game, due to
the excellent calibre of play the
firefighters possess.
"It is our sincere hope that Goderich is
included as one of the harbour stops for
future ships making the Greek Lakes
cruise...best of luck with your upcoming
harbour developments."
