The current state of the Canadian Armed
Forces and Royal Canadian Navy has ., en
the focus of a lottate ofa battlereadinessnd
Usually the to
the aniquated equipnieht of the ,navy are
pointed out as areas in need of attention.
Because of the current wave of adverse
publicity, it is easy to forget that by the end
of World War II, the Canadian Navy boasted
the third largest fleet on the high seas. Only
the Americans and the British had a -
stronger sea -going force at the time.
Because of this, there are a vast number
of ex -sailors in Canada and like any group of
people who shared the experience of work-
ing for a common goal, many of them like to
get together and recreate the comraderie of
the time.
The Huron County Branch of the Royal
Canadian Naval Association, based in
Goderich, has been reuniting ex -navy peo-
ple from all over the county for the past two
years.
Part of a national organization, the Hurop
County chapter was formed in November of
1982. Since then, the groupehas-been involv-
ed in a variety of community events and has
been active in providing services for ex -
naval personnel and their families.The
group currently has about 50 members.
The association is open to men and woolen
who served with any allied navy or mer-
chant marine corp., Although the majority
are veterans, members need not necessarily
have served during war -time, says John Str-
inger, secretary of the Huron—County
ro
The association is an important aspect of
the lives of members. and 'has a number of
specific alms and objectives, says Stringer.
"There's•a kind of bond among ex -sailors
that develops from working so 'closely
together and being dependent on each other:
One objective is to maintain that Conn-
raderie," he com>ipented.
Another objective of the organization is to
provide assistance to members and their
families in times of need.
A third goal is to make sure the events
concerning the role of the Canadian navy in
history are preserved. That is why the
Naval Associations nation-wide sponsor a
parade each year in early , May, com-
memorating the Battle of the Atlantic.
Stringer points out that it was in the Atlan-
tic Ocean that the Canadian navy played its
main role in defeating the Nazis in World
War II.
"The Battle of the Atlantic was not just
one battle lasting one day," he emphasizes.
Rather, Pit was struggle lasting throughout
the war to keep open the vital supply lines
from North America to Britain.
After 1943, says Stringer, it became
almost exclusively the job of the Canadian
Navy to escort merchant ships with their
cargos of supplies for England, across the
Atlantic. With the Americans involved in
battle with the Japanese in the Pacific and
the British busy around England, Canadians
were the only ones available to do the job.
Many ' Canadian sailors lost their lives
during these convoy missions and another
purpose of the navy association is to com-
association. memorate their sacrifice.
In this respect, the association is very
similar to the Royal Canadian Legion and
the two organizations work closely together.
In fact, most of the nayy, association
members are also Legion members, says
Stringer.
The two groups often parade together,
with the navy association parading
alongside the Legion on Remembrance Day
and the Legion color party joining in the
Battle of the Atlantic parade.

Further evidence of the co-operation
between the two groups is found in the fact
that navy association meetings are held in
the Legion building in Goderich.
Although a group that is, ,"not always
before the public", says Stringer, the
association has taken part in some • com-
munity activities.
Members of the Huron County chapter of the Royal Canadian Naval Association watch as
HMCS Saguenay pulls into,Goderieh Harbor. The association was instrumental in bringing
the historic battleship to Goderich last July. Members were also on hand, dressed in 19th
century Press Gang uniforms, to greet the tall ships when they came to Goderich. (Photo
courtesy George Woodall )
The Navy association was instrumental in
bringing the historic destroyer HMC
Saguenay to Goderich Harbor in July. Strt
Inger says the ship's appearance was well
attended and a number of area residents
toured the destroyer.
The association was also on hand when the
famed Tall Ships visited Goderich last mon-
th. Members dressed in "Press Gang"
uniforms of the type worn by 19th century
British sailors, met the Tall Ships and tied
them up.
The costumes drew a great deal of in-
terest and some strange comments from the
crowd. -
"One woman wanted to know if we were
, off the Polish ship," says Stringer.
Next year Stringer expects the .associa-
tion to have a higher profile in the communi-
ty, as 1985 marks the 75th anniversary of the
founding of the 'Royal Canadian Naval
Association,
Commemorative ceremonies and events
will mark the occassion in communities
across Canada, says Stringer.
Still, the Battle of the Atlantic parade will
be the big event for the association as usual.
Stringer feels it is important for people to
have a clear understanding of the reason the
parade is held.
, "The Battle of the Atlantic Parade is not
held to glorify war. We have these parades
ro remember shipmates who -did not come
back and to remember a very important
part of Canadian history," he says, adding,
"These things should not be forgotten."
