Was it fun, ag- gravating, exhilarating.ar just plain iffy? Mine was Frustrating - fqr three days. I couldn't find a painting I had been working on t o nights earlier. I had just put it out of the way as I didn't want anyone to see it at the awkward stage. I have to have it finish- ed pretty soon but where did I put it? For two whole shays I kept searching - even looked in our overstuffed garage - it wasn't there. This morning I sif down to write this col-- umn, four days later, in my nice old rocking chair which had been moved to the little room at the front of the house (when my kids read this they won't believe I could .get a chair of ANY shape into THAT roorrp)! Anyway, I'm trying to get my jumbled thoughts together when my eyes move up the wall to the five foot level and I'm staring into my unfinished painting! I just KNEW it would turn up. I'm sure it hasn'f been there all week because I moved practically everything in the room looking around - and DOWN! DOWN'N AROUND! ! So here I go again. The cool wind Sunday and the sharp starry sky made me think of frost and brittle air and runny noses and. a lot of such stuff. When fall comes, we are so busy looking at warm clothing, boots - where are those boots - and what can' you wear on your head? Where has the summer gone? I know it was just beautiful - warm 'n sunny. I en- joyed it, but what of these cold breezes we are getting - are they trying- to- tell us something? They are certainly making me think of a lot of unfinished things. The story - poern James Whitcomb Riley wrote so many yearsago - one we are too busy to read when October comes - one we all know but a few words or lines escape us should be brought to us NOW - and here's the first two verses. • "When the frost is on the punkin' and the fodder's in the shock - (Can't you just -see those little teepees of corn all over the field) ? And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the .struttin' turkey cock, And the clackin' of the ,guineys, and the cluckin' of the hens And the rooster's hallyiooyer as he tiptoes on the fence; Oh it's then's the time a feller is a -feeling at his best with the risin' sun to greet him from night of peaceful rest, As he leave, the house., bareheaded, and goes out to feed the Stock. When the frost is on the. Dunkin' and the fodder's in the shock. They's something kind OMar'y-like about the, atmusfere when tile heat of sununer's over and the coolin' fail is here - and the mumble of the hurnrnln' ui'd?s and buzzing of the bees: but the air', so appetizin' - and the landscape thru' the haze is a pictur' that no painter has the rOlorin' to ,,nock, - when • the frost in on the punkin' and the fodder's in the shock. At the harbour the other day, the Algosoo was getting salt but the tail end of that ship looked like someone had taken a cleaver and CHOP - there goes 40 or more feet of ship!ait is nice to see c•har;ges made - especially on hard working ship:,. There's never a (lull moment i+lung the lakeshore. So many cars go whizzing into the lookouts and away again - guess they just have to make, sure that old Lake,Iluron 1s still there. St Christopher's Reach down below theta is alive with activity. Swimmers and eaters, sand pilers and rock finders vie with the col- . or -fol wjn(lsurfirW of so many sturdy - beautiful -Yount; adults. It was so relaxing - yet exciting to watch them ,getting started on those !WIN toys. I watched one young couple - he tried to ,.;lay on the surf board grid pull up the sa11 - and she had 0 r„')'' on the thing trying to - I don't rerIl i , kilo what shc was trying to do! So I left (0n down the road - sure enough the rock- ' and chain and everything was in order 4nd - starting bac k I could see our surfer away out on the lake. He sure]} tra'eller] fa:t -,but how was he going to get !lark. The ,::I,'i t' as `(), col'! I r 'rldr't 1n flt.•1 uUe I ,t' pe 't,r' aro really appreciative of Lhrs foie l)Cd h now - atter so mam years of hesitation in t etting it starter] Anyway. we now c it and vs c say thank you for all the harq work that had to he done before we t.ould see what. was happening. When we moved to town, where the beach lies was just rocks and chbblestones - and 1t stretched 'way out into the lake. The gulls )ved it and my son's beautiful des had thr thrid of chasing the gulls. lie was almost crowned as he swam - in icy water - hack to his master- who already had his shoes off ready for he rescue. At. that time the rocks had formed a little bay on one side. it hard quite a slope to it. T wouldn't have wanted to sec how deep it was. There were loud, large, frogs in the hoe on the shore but the dog had run straight out over the cobbles and sent all the birds flvint. then made a dash into the middle of the little bav tri get hack to his master. T recall it was icy cold with a vrry strong wind. This was the young dog's first visit to a lake and I had feared it was his 1st, but he finally crawler] to Don's feet and just lav Blore. So 111 never forget that little episode. Years later there were stone crushers and big trucks and other machinery that cleared that little point of land, ri it out. I do have a painting of it and those big old birches (I think they're birches I that line the road. Another thing - the buildings down there look very nice. Someday it just may he our only stretch of sandy beach - if tAey can cap- ture enough sand Well. 1 don't know how I got away from what I had planned to talk about - I'll think of it tomorrow. We had a lovely weekend visiting friends we have loved since ow -ear- ly day, here They had corn from a farm near the Benmiller church that was the tastiest, juiciest corn I've ever had. Too bad - like the summer. corn eating has a very short eating period. My frustrations now seem to have been pettyaand things now appear( like the pain- ting - bright and sunny! i think about all you nice people - hope your days are always SUNNY' • Love, Martha. a Labc.:: ALL A&P STORES WILL BE CLOSED LABOUR DAY -MONDAY, SEPT. 3rd LIMIT 2 PER FAMILY WITH A MINIMUM 10.00 PURCHASE EXCLUDING THIS ITEM GRADE 'A', FROZEN, EVISCERATED, Self -Basting Young Tuiloeys Sea T* 0,, , Vis$0 s, sed IV"'CgCI SAO oscoot- 6T010 pounds average TRUCK LOAD SALE.
