BY PASTOR HERBERT A. McLEOD
.FREE METHODIST CHURCH
This is a delightful -season of the year - no
fuel bills, heavy coats or snow to shovel. The
earth is bringing forth fruit - grapes,
peaches, wheat, clover, corn and the like.
Life would be drab indeed if we had only -
the absence of fuel bills and snow, without
the blessings of apples, peaches, etc. Let us
thank the Giver of all good for His great
MINISTER'S STUDY
faithfulness in providing for our physical
(reeds.
The Bible has much to say about the
importance of Spiritual Fruit. John 15 tells
us that God's plan for His people is that they
should bring forth fruit, more fruit, and
much fruit. The fruitless branches are to be
cut off and burned. What penetrating truth
that is! It "prompts the question: "What is
meant by fruit?" •
Galatians 5:22,23 answers this for us, -
"The fruit of the Spirit is Love (both to God .
and our neighbours), Joy (a delight in God),
Peace (with God, and a peaceable
disposition towards other people), Long
Suffering (patiently bearing and forgiving
all provocations and injuries), Faithfuingss
(to God, our coLripanions and others),
Kindness (in an unkind world), Goodness (in
an e1vil generation), Gentleness (in a cruel
dog-eat-dog kind of atmosphere) and Self -
Control (in a world that knows all too little of
such a spirit.)
Ephesians 5:9 and Philippians 1:11 also
focus our attention on this subject.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:16-20, "By their
fruit you will recognize them" Ile was
speaking here specifically about "fruit" as
the mark of identity of both the False and
the True Prophet. Let us be so open and
responsive to the Holy Spirit that we will be
the blessing God wants us to be in this our
day and generation.
